The ten finalists for this year’s SLAS Innovation Award have been announced. Each presenter will be competing for a $10,000 cash prize to be awarded after the closing keynote on the final day of SLAS2019. These podium presentations were selected due to their outstanding innovations and contributions to the exploration of advancing technologies in the lab and include topics such as high-throughput organ-on-chip drug screening in immuno-oncology, microfluidic functional screening and live-cell gene imaging. Scientists at UCLA have developed a technique for coaxing pluripotent stem cells, which can be grown indefinitely in the lab, into becoming mature T cells capable of killing tumor cells. Research at the University of Arkansas on membrane proteins could lead to better development and testing of drugs. Chemistry researchers studied a type of membrane protein that expels drugs from a cell, contributing to drug resistance. They found that the lipid composition of the cell membrane has an effect on the behavior of these proteins, which should be taken into account when testing drugs that target membrane proteins. Their results are available open-access in the journal ACS Central Science.

Now, a team of scientists at Stanford University has identified a bundle of brain cells in mice responsible for the latter — that is, the negative emotions of pain.
Pain research has traditionally focused on the neurons and molecules at the front line of pain perception — the cells in nerves that process stings, cuts, burns and the like — and ultimately convey a physical threat message.

Two online sites that would post scientific manuscripts for free prior to peer review had launched just weeks earlier. ChemRxiv was initially launched by ACS, with guidance from the Royal Society of Chemistry, the German Chemical Society, and other scientific organizations and publishers. And ChemRN was Elsevier’s latest offering in its sprawling SSRN repository.
