CRISPR System's Optimized Guides Can Target RNA, Including Coronavirus RNA
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
Once overshadowed by DNA-targeting CRISPR systems, RNA-targeting CRISPR systems are stepping into the light. What’s more, RNA-targeting CRISPR systems are advancing on important applications for which they are uniquely well suited. For example, they can silence gene expression at the transcriptional level, which is advantageous if the corresponding targets at the genomic level are hard to access. Also, RNA-targeting CRISPR systems can be effective in targeting RNA viruses such as the coronaviruses or influenza viruses.

Scientists Identify Potential Targets for Immune Responses to SARS-CoV-2
Lab Manager
Within two months, SARS-CoV-2, a previously unknown coronavirus, has raced around globe, infecting over a 100,000 people with numbers continuing to rise quickly. Effective countermeasures require helpful tools to monitor viral spread and understand how the immune system responds to the virus.
Publishing in the March 16, 2020, online issue of Cell, Host and Microbe, a team of researchers at La Jolla Institute for Immunology, in collaboration with researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute, provides the first analysis of potential targets for effective immune responses against the novel coronavirus.

Hydroxide Based Integrated CO2 Capture from Air and Conversion to Methanol
Journal of the American Chemical Society
The first example of an alkali hydroxide-based system for CO2 capture and conversion to methanol has been established. Bicarbonate and formate salts were hydrogenated to methanol with high yields in a solution of ethylene glycol. In an integrated one-pot system, CO2 was efficiently captured by an ethylene glycol solution of the base and subsequently hydrogenated to CH3OH at relatively mild temperatures (100–140 °C) using Ru-PNP catalysts. The produced methanol can be easily separated by distillation.

Newly Discovered 'Magic Methyl' Reaction Could Turbocharge the Potency of Some Drugs
Science Magazine
For years, drug discovery chemists have struggled to streamline a process that can boost a drug’s potency up to 2000-fold: “magic methylation.” The reaction sweeps out single hydrogen atoms and replaces them with methyl groups—reshaping the drug molecule to more easily interact with its biological targets. But carrying out this sleight of hand is so difficult that few researchers even try. Now, a team of chemists reports it has created a new catalyst that performs this delicate exchange with ease on a wide variety of druglike molecules, an advance that could lead to novel treatments for everything from cancer to infectious diseases.

Solving a Mystery in 126 Dimensions
Science Daily
One of the fundamental mysteries of chemistry has been solved by Australian scientists — and the result may have implications for future designs of solar cells, organic light-emitting diodes and other next gen technologies.
Ever since the 1930s debate has raged inside chemistry circles concerning the fundamental structure of benzene. It is a debate that in recent years has taken on added urgency, because benzene is the smallest molecule that can be used in the production of opto-electronic materials, which are revolutionising renewable energy and telecommunications tech.

Mechanical Chirality Gives New Shape to Catalysis
Chemical & Engineering News
Researchers in the UK have used a mechanically planar chiral rotaxane as the basis for an enantioselective gold catalyst. Stephen Goldup and Andrew Heard at the University of Southampton say their work is a proof of concept that mechanical bonds can be used to build “pockets” for selective synthesis akin to those found in enzymes. Heard started by building and separating two mechanically chiral rotaxanes. Rotaxanes are mechanically interlocked molecules in which a macrocycle is threaded onto a dumbbell-shaped compound or axle.

Amplification and Imaging of MicroRNA as a Biomarker to Detect Tumor Development
Phys.org
A good indicator of dysregulation in live cells is a change in their RNA expression. MicroRNA (miRNA), a special type of RNA, is considered a biomarker for carcinogenic cells. A team of scientists from China has found a way to amplify miRNA in live tumor cells for bioimaging. As they report in the journal Angewandte Chemie, their assay is based on a robust cellular autocatalytic biocircuit triggered by synthetic DNA and nanoparticles.
