Journal of the American Chemical Society
The sustainable production of chemically recyclable polymers presents a significant opportunity to polymer scientists to tackle the growing environmental and energy problems of current petroleum-based plastics. Despite recent advances, however, there are still pressing needs for an expanded horizon of chemically recyclable polymers. Herein, we introduce a new paradigm of biosourced polythioesters (PTEs) with high polymerizability and complete recyclability under mild and economical conditions.

The analysis of lipid droplets by mass spectrometry at the single LD level is still an analytical challenge. In this work, we developed a novel technique termed in-tip solvent microextraction mass spectrometry for the separation and profiling of phosphatidylcholines and triglycerides within a single LD. This method has been successfully used to analyze LDs in mammalian cells and to compare the profiles of triglycerides and phosphatidylcholines in LDs induced at different conditions.

Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
This is an exciting time for the field of gene therapy. It feels as if there is a renaissance underway following a difficult two decades when the community had to retrench, learning and recovering from the tragic setbacks in clinical trials in the United States and France.
But in 2019, we can see genuine progress on many fronts. As documented on 60 Minutes, a stem cell gene therapy trial for sickle cell disease is showing real promise in treating this common and painful disease.

NUS chemists have developed a cost effective method to synthesise geminal organodiboron compounds which are versatile chemical building blocks for the development of fine chemicals.
Organoboron compounds play an increasingly important role in organic chemistry due to their low toxicity and stability. These compounds contain active carbon-boron bonds which can readily undergo diverse chemical reactions to produce new chemical compounds with a wide variety of functional groups.

By studying a large set of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), researchers have uncovered a simple relationship between the energetics of a reactive site species and the probability of driving methane oxidation in these porous crystalline materials. The discovery provides rules-of thumb that can be incorporated into computational algorithms for screening large numbers of MOFs quickly and cost-effectively in search of catalysts that can activate methane under moderate reaction conditions.

The stirrers that mix cream into your coffee probably don't make much difference to the drink. But in a chemistry lab, it turns out using the wrong stirrer can skew the science.
Rice University scientists have determined that stir bars made of PTFE, more commonly known as Teflon, can introduce errors into a standard lab reaction used to manipulate the properties of carbon or boron-nitride nanotubes.

Cells that line the intestinal tract are replaced every few days — a high rate of turnover that relies on a healthy population of intestinal stem cells.
MIT and University of Tokyo biologists have now found that aging takes a toll on intestinal stem cells and may contribute to increased susceptibility to disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
The researchers also showed that they could reverse this effect in aged mice by treating them with a compound that helps boost the population of intestinal stem cells.

Working with mice, a team of Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers has developed a relatively inexpensive, portable mini microscope that could improve scientists' ability to image the effects of cancer, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and other conditions in the brains of living and active mice over time. The device, which measures less than five cubic centimeters, is docked onto animals' heads and gathers real-time images from the active brains of mice moving naturally around their environments.
