New class of superbases
Chemical & Engineering News Share

Cyclopropenimines can serve as highly effective "superbases" for enantioselective organocatalysis, researchers have discovered. The findings could lead to easier and faster syntheses of novel chiral compounds for drug discovery and other applications. In recent years, researchers have developed several types of organic bases to catalyze enantioselective proton-transfer reactions and yield optically enriched products.

Lifetime of carbon capture and storage as a climate-change mitigation technology
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Share

In carbon capture and storage, CO2 is captured at power plants and then injected underground into reservoirs like deep saline aquifers for long-term storage. While CCS may be critical for the continued use of fossil fuels in a carbon-constrained world, the deployment of CCS has been hindered by uncertainty in geologic storage capacities and sustainable injection rates, which has contributed to the absence of concerted government policy.

Tuning multiphase amphiphilic rods to direct self-assembly
Journal of the American Chemical Society Share

New methods to direct the self-assembly of particles are highly sought after for multiple applications, including photonics, electronics and drug delivery. Most techniques, however, are limited to chemical patterning on spherical particles, limiting the range of possible structures. The authors developed a lithographic technique for fabrication of chemically anisotropic rod-like particles in which they could specify both the size and shape of particles and implement multiple diverse materials to control interfacial interactions.
