Journal of the American Chemical Society
A complete series of experimental and theoretical investigations on the supramolecular polymerization of chiral (1 and 2) and achiral (3) oligo(phenylene ethynylene) tricarboxamides is reported. The performance of seargents-and-soldiers and majority rules experiments has allowed deriving a full set of thermodynamic parameters, including the helix reversal penalty and the mismatch penalty.

Lionel Hillard’s boss asked him to come into his office. It was the late 1980s in Dallas. The then 29-year-old was a medical assistant at a busy clinic with a room full of patients. But the doctor who ran it said he needed to talk with him about the results of his routine blood work.
"He said, 'Lionel, you are HIV positive,'" Hillard recalls.
Hillard held it together for the rest of the workday, then broke down when he got home.

Congenital hepatic fibrosis is a rare genetic disease that causes malformation and fibrosis (scarring) of the liver. Occurring in roughly one out of every 20,000 births, CHF can lead to an enlarged liver, impaired blood flow to the intestines (portal hypertension), infection of the bile ducts and liver failure. In severe cases, a liver transplant is usually needed to treat the disease.

The National Human Genome Research Institute is nearing the halfway point of a major strategic planning process, one that aims to publish a "2020 vision for genomics" in late 2020. The new plan will "detail the most exciting opportunities for genomics research and its application to human health and disease at the dawn of the new decade." In this exclusive interview, Eric D. Green, MD, PhD, the director of the NHGRI, discusses the process and some of the early takeaways from the planning effort.

Most antibiotics work by interfering with critical functions such as DNA replication or construction of the bacterial cell wall. However, these mechanisms represent only part of the full picture of how antibiotics act.
In a new study of antibiotic action, MIT researchers developed a new machine-learning approach to discover an additional mechanism that helps some antibiotics kill bacteria.

Known for their ability to remove methane from the environment and convert it into a usable fuel, methanotrophic bacteria have long fascinated researchers. But how, exactly, these bacteria naturally perform such a complex reaction has been a mystery.
Now an interdisciplinary team at Northwestern University has found that the enzyme responsible for the methane-methanol conversion catalyzes this reaction at a site that contains just one copper ion.

Adaptive immune responses are defined as antigen sensitization–dependent and antigen-specific responses leading to establishment of long-lived immunological memory. Although natural killer cells have traditionally been considered cells of the innate immune system, mounting evidence in mice and nonhuman primates warrants reconsideration of the existing paradigm that B and T cells are the sole mediators of adaptive immunity.

Researchers teamed up to investigate the complex dynamics of low-water liquids that challenge nuclear waste processing at federal cleanup sites.
The results, featured as a cover in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B, help shed light on the fundamental chemistry at work in legacy tank waste, which is especially difficult to process because of the presence of unpredictable low-water or "water-in-salt" solutions.
