Chemical Discovery in the Era of Metabolomics
Journal of the American Chemical Society
Untargeted metabolomics aims to quantify the complete set of metabolites within a biological system, most commonly by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Since nearly the inception of the field, compound identification has been widely recognized as the rate-limiting step of the experimental workflow. In spite of exponential increases in the size of metabolomic databases, which now contain experimental MS/MS spectra for over a half a million reference compounds, chemical structures still cannot be confidently assigned to many signals in a typical LC/MS dataset.

New COVID-19 Antibody Test Targets Unique Region of Spike Protein
Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
A reliable antibody test for COVID-19 is critical to identify any and all individuals who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2, regardless of clinical symptoms. This serological test is urgently needed to conduct surveillance, gain a better understanding of infection rates — especially the number of infections in people with mild or no symptoms who can still be carriers — and implement strategies to contain spread.

Hydroxychloroquine Trials in Turmoil
Chemical & Engineering News
Clinical studies continue to suggest that the antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine do not help treat or prevent COVID-19. One high-profile study published in the Lancet even concluded that the drugs may increase the risk of death. Those results prompted several groups, including the World Health Organization and the pharmaceutical company Sanofi, to suspend or terminate trials of the drugs.

Could Statins Reduce the Severity of COVID-19?
The Scientist
On March 21, epidemiologist Haleema Shakur-Still got a WhatsApp message from Temitayo Shokunbi, a colleague at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He asked about starting a trial for treating COVID-19 patients with the drug hydroxychloroquine. At the time, several trials were already in the works to investigate the effectiveness of the antimalarial to counter SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, so Shakur-Still didn’t think starting another one on the antimalarial would add much new information.

Cutting-Edge Computing Paves Way to Future of NMR Spectroscopy
Phys.org
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy helps chemists and other scientists identify and explore atomic structures. However, NMR is limited by the availability of catalogs of reference data to compare and identify structures.
New collaborative research leveraged quantum chemistry approaches to develop additional data infrastructure for an isotope of silicon, 29Si.

Lab Makes 4-D Printing More Practical
Science Daily
Soft robots and biomedical implants that reconfigure themselves upon demand are closer to reality with a new way to print shapeshifting materials.
Rafael Verduzco and graduate student Morgan Barnes of Rice's Brown School of Engineering developed a method to print objects that can be manipulated to take on alternate forms when exposed to changes in temperature, electric current or stress.

Computer Algorithms Find Tumors' Molecular Weak Spots
Science Magazine
In 2016, doctors invited Eileen Kapotes to join a clinical trial for a drug that had never been used for her disease. Kapotes, a first grade teacher in her 50s, was fighting an aggressive breast cancer that had spread through her body. She had endured grueling treatments over the previous 4 years, including whole-brain radiation therapy. She had also been taking the breast cancer medication Herceptin, but her tumors were still growing.

How Sugar-Tagging Helps Drugs Target Prostate Cancer Cells
Lab Manager
Scientists of Far Eastern Federal University, together with German and Russian colleagues, have developed a lead compound to fight chemotherapy-resistant prostate cancer. The original design comes from scientists combining biologically active molecules from the chemically modified pigment of sea urchins with glucose molecules to deliver the active drug substance to the tumor cells. A related article recently was published in Marine Drugs.
