Santosh Paidi, an innovative Ph.D. candidate from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD, USA), uses surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to uncover the mysteries of circulating tumor DNA in the bloodstream, and encourages others to bravely tackle research problems outside their areas of expertise. "You can apply what you know already to answer questions in life sciences," says Paidi in a new article in the SLAS Electronic Laboratory Neighborhood (SLAS ELN). Paidi is recipient of the 2018 SLAS Graduate Education Fellowship Grant.

Travel to Brussels with SLAS CEO Vicki Loise's latest blog post as she captures the spirit of the inaugural SLAS Europe Conference and Exhibition. "This event was five years in the making," Loise reports. "Those attending the event felt it lived up to the SLAS standards of quality, with many options for networking, fascinating and entertaining keynotes and an excellent scientific program."

Fresh off the inaugural 2018 SLAS Europe Conference and Exhibition in Brussels, we are poised to keep the momentum going with fresh ideas for 2018-19 educational events in Europe. The SLAS Europe Scientific Program Committee seeks new members from academia, nonprofit, government and industry to contribute to year-long educational programming strategy, including the 2019 SLAS Europe Conference and Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain, as well as other in-person conferences and virtual events. Committee members should be SLAS Premier Members (dues-paying members) and are asked to commit to a three-year term of participation to ensure continuity and follow-through. View the full charter of the Europe Scientific Program Committee (Europe SPC). European volunteers are also sought to contribute their insight to the SLAS Advocacy Committee, Strategic Alliances Committee and Awards and Grants Committee. Interested members should complete the online volunteer form no later than July 31.

In Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and tau neurofibrillary tangles are the two pathological hallmarks. The co-occurrence and combined reciprocal pathological effects of Aβ and tau protein aggregation have been observed in animal models of the disease. However, the molecular mechanism of their interaction remain unknown. Using a variety of biophysical measurements, we here show that the native full-length tau protein solubilizes the Aβ40 peptide and prevents its fibrillation.

A critical link in mapping recurrent mutations of melanoma — the most serious form of skin cancer in humans — has been discovered by researchers at Washington State University School of Molecular Biosciences, in collaboration with researchers at Georgia State University.
In a paper published in Nature Communications, researchers established that DNA binding by a specific set of transcription factors, called ETS, is inherently mutagenic in UV-exposed cells.

With their electronic and spatial properties, the new class of what are known as phosphine ligands ensures that catalysts are more active and more stable. As effective as the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki reaction is for forming carbon-carbon bonds, researchers see room for improvement. Homogeneous palladium catalysts can be tough to separate from products, and fixing the problem by attaching catalysts to solid supports can lead to problematic metal leaching. Meanwhile, heterogeneous palladium nanoparticle catalysts on solid supports rarely catalyze the reaction efficiently.

New research published in The Lancet shows that an experimental HIV-1 vaccine regimen is well-tolerated and generated comparable and robust immune responses against HIV in healthy adults and rhesus monkeys. Moreover, the vaccine candidate protected against infection with an HIV-like virus in monkeys.
Based on the results from this phase 1/2a clinical trial that involved nearly 400 healthy adults, a phase 2b trial has been initiated in southern Africa to determine the safety and efficacy of the HIV-1 vaccine candidate in 2,600 women at risk for acquiring HIV.

In a preprint posted to bioRxiv, researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) report using a CRISPR-Cas9 gene drive in mammals for the first time. Gene drives ensure that offspring preferentially inherit one parent's particular allele, so that a variant can quickly spread through a population even if it is detrimental to reproduction or survival. The UCSD researchers were only able to get a drive to work for female mouse offspring, and then only 73 percent of the time.

A team led by the University of California San Diego has developed a chip that can detect a type of genetic mutation known as a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and send the results in real time to a smartphone, computer, or other electronic device. The chip is at least 1,000 times more sensitive at detecting an SNP than current technology. The advance, published in Advanced Materials, could lead to cheaper, faster and portable biosensors for early detection of genetic markers for diseases such as cancer.
