In his monthly Electronic Laboratory Neighborhood president's column, Alan Fletcher explains the importance of attending SLAS2020. Not only does the usefulness lie in the education and technology innovation presented, but it's the attendee engagement that makes this such an important event. "I'd like to focus on how YOU can make the most of this conference. I truly believe a person receives rewards from any activity in proportion to the effort they themselves invest in that activity." Fletcher continues, "I am a great believer that the more you give the more you receive in return and my career has certainly benefited from being a part of this unique group of outstanding individuals."

Multinuclear silver clusters encapsulated by DNA exhibit size-tunable emission spectra and rich photophysics, but their atomic organization is poorly understood. Herein, we describe the structure of one such hybrid chromophore, a green-emitting Ag8 cluster arranged in a Big Dipper-shape bound to the oligonucleotide A2C4.

A new tool in the CRISPR toolbox doubles the number of single-base RNA edits on researchers' wish lists. The tool — aptly named RNA Editing for Specific C-to-U Exchange (RESCUE) — can be programmed to convert targeted cytosine bases into uridine bases, complementing existing RNA base editors, which convert targeted adenine bases into inosine bases.

A team from the Ruhr Explores Solvation Cluster of Excellence at Ruhr-Universität Bochum has created new molecules with magnetic properties. In contrast to many earlier organic magnets, the molecules were stable in the presence of water and oxygen. Their magnetic properties were retained up to minus 110 degrees Celsius — which is relatively warm for these compounds.

A group of Japanese researchers mainly from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and Hokkaido University drastically enhanced and sped up the way to producing skeletally diverse indole alkaloids, composed of the medicinally-relevant scaffolds. By leveraging computational and synthetic approaches, this group has successfully developed a concise and versatile synthetic process generating densely-functionalized multicyclic complex scaffolds.

People with a rare form of inherited blindness are being enrolled for the world's first in vivo human study of a CRISPR-based therapy, the Associated Press reported. The experimental treatment, developed by Massachusetts-based genome-editing company Editas Medicine and Ireland-based pharmaceutical firm Allergan, removes a deleterious mutation from cells in patients' retinas, and will be tested in 18 adults and children later this year.

The ability to regenerate missing body parts is a prominent feature of many animals. Investigation into the cellular and molecular basis of regeneration using highly regenerative model organisms should identify principles that explain how regeneration can occur and might clarify why such regenerative capacity is limited in humans. Hydra are freshwater cnidarians capable of whole-body regeneration after amputation.

Old-school Hollywood editors cut unwanted frames of film and patched in desired frames to make a movie. The human body does something similar &mdsah; trillions of times per second — through a biochemical editing process called RNA splicing. Rather than cutting film, it edits the messenger RNA that is the blueprint for producing the many proteins found in cells.

Eperts picked at the differences between the defined field of green chemistry and the more imprecise concept of sustainable chemistry at a recent U.S. congressional hearing. Their discussions could influence legislation backed by industry and academics that would focus federal efforts on characterizing and directing grant funding to sustainable chemistry.
