All SLAS2016 registrants are invited to commandeer one of America's longest-serving and most impressive aircraft carriers to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the SLAS International Conference and Exhibition on Jan. 26.

From stem to stern, the entire ship will belong exclusively to the SLAS community to explore exhibits, meet old friends, make new professional contacts and enjoy a bountiful buffet, select wines, domestic beers and soft drinks. The USS Midway is rated #1 of 519 things to do in San Diego.

Author Peter J. T. Morris, Science Museum in London, provides a unique look at the history of chemistry by exploring the design and tools evolution of the chemistry laboratory. He shows how chemists have impacted what science can now do — using examples such as how the introduction of coal gas into Robert Wilhelm Bunsen's laboratory led to the eponymous burner, which then led to the development of atomic spectroscopy.

"The Matter Factory is the story of the years (and centuries) when chemistry was finding out what it could do. It covers a lot of ground and brings together many old drawings, plans, and photographs that are otherwise scattered through a bewildering literature trail. It should remain the definitive history of the chemistry lab for many years," according to an editorial review in Nature.

While many encourage college-bound students to follow their passions, SLAS2016 keynote speaker Adam Diedrich Steltzner believes that passion is discovered over time. Now an aeronautics engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and leader of the team that invented the pioneering landing system that placed the Curiosity rover on the Martian surface, Steltzner's career journey began by noticing stars in the sky and wanting to understand why they moved.
