SLAS
In his latest Electronic Laboratory Neighborhood monthly column, SLAS President Alan Fletcher gives a background on two important student awards that are available through the SLAS Educational Fund and how they can help fill the gaps in the pursuit of post-grad research. "Even those of us who like to reminisce about our post grad student days can remember many of the stressors — where to attend graduate school, who to study with and how to get things done while still attempting to eat, exercise and sleep (well, at least eat) and where to turn for help to locate much need resources." Read more about Fletcher's support of the SLAS Graduate Education Fellowship Grant and SLAS Visiting Graduate Researcher Programs. Reminder: Applications for both are due Monday, December 16.

Journal of the American Chemical Society
The performance of ion-conducting polymer membranes is complicated by an intricate interplay between chemistry and morphology that is challenging to understand. Here, we report on perfuoro ionene chain extended ionomers that contain either one or two bis(sulfonyl)imide groups on the side-chain in addition to a terminal sulfonic acid group. PFICE ionomers exhibit greater water uptake and conductivity compared to prototypical perfluorinated sulfonic acid ionomers.

University of Cambridge researchers have shown that an algorithm can predict the outcomes of complex chemical reactions with over 90% accuracy, outperforming trained chemists. The algorithm also shows chemists how to make target compounds, providing the chemical "map" to the desired destination. The results are reported in two studies in the journals ACS Central Science and Chemical Communications.

Chemical & Engineering News
The reliance on spectroscopic data in various regulatory and legal settings can make it tempting to tamper with spectra to yield desired results. One possible way to tamper might be during the analysis of spectra, by making small perturbations in the data that can lead to major changes in interpretation. Garth Simpson and coworkers at Purdue University are using "adversarial spectroscopy" to figure out how to make data analysis approaches more resistant to such attacks, Simpson reported at the ACS national meeting in San Diego.

Nanopore sensor conceptually represents an ideal single molecule counting device due to its unique partitioning-free, label-free electronic sensing. Existing theories and experiments have shown that sample concentration is proportional to the molecule translocation rate. However, a detailed nanopore geometry and size characterization or a calibration curve of concentration standards are often required for quantifying the unknown sample.

A team of scientists has discovered a new possible pathway toward forming carbon structures in space using a specialized chemical exploration technique at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The team's research has now identified several avenues by which ringed molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, can form in space.

Cortical organoids — three-dimensional bundles of neurons and glia grown in a dish from induced pluripotent stem cells — look a lot like tiny brains. And while the gene expression, cell types and organization found in these spherical structures have similarities to the developing cortex, it's not clear whether they're also an appropriate model in which to explore how neural networks form.

Armed with a tiny new thermometer probe that can quickly measure temperature inside of a cell, University of Illinois researchers have illuminated a mysterious aspect of metabolism: heat generation.
Mitochondria, the cell's power stations, release quick bursts of heat by unleashing the power stored in an internal proton "battery," the researchers found. Better understanding of this process could point to new targets for treating obesity and cancer, they say.

Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News
In recent years we've seen the power of analyzing cell-free DNA to diagnose and track the progression of cancer. Yet, using this technology as a diagnostic tool for infectious diseases required scientists to overcome numerous hurdles. For instance, a common problem in diagnosing infectious disease is that the presence of a potential pathogen in the body does not necessarily mean the patient is sick.
