SLAS Grant Winner Julea Vlassakis: Fearless in the Face of Anything New and Unexplored

Discover the drive and desire of the University of California, Berkeley student that led to her $100,000 SLAS Graduate Education Fellowship Grant award. Vlassakis' research is to design and optimize a method for delivery of F-actin stabilization lysis buffer for high-throughput lysis and electrophoresis of G-actin.

She plans to design a novel functional material for high-throughput, in-hydrogel detection of F- and G-actin from single cells, as well as conduct assay validation and application in a high-throughput, whole-genome screen to determine genes that protect actin filament stability.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. ET, view a live webcast of the 27th 'First Annual' Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony in the Sanders Theater at Harvard University. The Ig Nobel Awards celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology. For example, the 2016 prize for biology went jointly to Charles Foster for living in the wild as, at different times, a badger, an otter, a deer, a fox and a bird; and to Thomas Thwaites, for creating prosthetic extensions of his limbs that allowed him to move in the manner of, and spend time roaming hills in the company of, goats.

Winners are not notified in advance; they learn of their honor at the ceremony. Ig Nobel Award presenter and co-founder Marc Abrahams is the SLAS2018 closing keynote speaker.

Researchers Review the Clinical Potential of Senolytic Drugs on Aging

Researchers are moving closer to realizing the clinical potential of drugs that have previously been shown to support healthy aging in animals. In a review article published online in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Mayo Clinic aging experts say that, if proven to be effective and safe in humans, these drugs could be "transformative" by preventing or delaying chronic conditions as a group instead of one at a time. People could start receiving life-saving treatment for cancer and other diseases much earlier with the help of a new method to analyze blood proteins. A paper by researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory describes a new way to prepare and analyze blood samples that significantly improves researchers' ability to detect proteins that exist in very low concentrations — as little as 10 picograms per milliliter of blood. An analysis of more than 100 clinical trials found that they were often unregistered, unpublished and had discrepancies in the reporting of primary outcomes, according to a study published by JAMA. The study is being released to coincide with its presentation at the Eighth International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication. A major aim of trial registration is to help identify and deter the selective reporting of outcomes based on the results. More

Although a surgeon's goal is to remove cancer in its entirety during excision surgery, achieving negative margins (absence of cancer cells at the outer edge of the excised tumor specimen) can be challenging. Researchers are starting to discover the curing powers of plasma — bringing the ion-based form of matter into medical realms. A kind of plasma called non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma can help heal wounds, destroy cancer cells and kill harmful bacteria. The jets of plasma that doctors might use, however, often become turbulent with the direction and velocity changing dramatically. More


Cancer Immunotherapy May Be Improved If Tregs Are Deftly Impaired

The balancing act that is cancer immunotherapy requires that the body's antitumor response be given a boost, but not too much of a boost. For example, simply getting rid of Tregs, the regulatory T cells that moderate the immune system’s attack on cancer, would be risky. Such a rash act might precipitate a dangerous autoimmune reaction. An alternative, less extreme approach would be to inhibit Tregs while keeping them around. More
