Molecular hydrogen evolution catalysts are synthetically tunable and often exhibit high activity, but they are also hampered by stability concerns and practical limitations associated with their use in the homogeneous phase. Their incorporation as integral linker units in metal–organic frameworks can remedy these shortcomings. Moreover, the extended three-dimensional structure of MOFs gives rise to high catalyst loadings per geometric surface area.

Chemotherapy screening plays a crucial role in cancer drug discovery and clinical medicine. Although conventional methods have contributed greatly to macromanipulation of cell populations, profounder insights related to the tumor microenvironment require approaches for completing integrated cell–3-D tumor micromanipulation, massive tumor simulation and production, and dynamic and high-throughput tumor analysis.

Recalling the exploits of the Grimm brothers' Brave Little Tailor, scientists at Harvard's Wyss Institute showed that they could treat multiple age-related diseases with a single gene therapy. Although the scientists, based in George M. Church's laboratory, couldn't boast of slaying seven giants in one blow, they did help laboratory mice fare better against obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart failure and renal failure.

Synthetic organic chemists are accustomed to pushing electrons around. They use reducing reagents to force electrons into molecules and oxidizing reagents to strip them out. But using electrons on their own as a tool to synthesize molecules — electrochemistry, in other words — has been a niche of just a few.
That's starting to change.
Over the past few years, interest in electrochemistry for organic synthesis has surged, thanks to a small but growing cadre of synthetic organic chemists.

A new way of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of air could provide a significant tool in the battle against climate change. The new system can work on the gas at virtually any concentration level, even down to the roughly 400 parts per million currently found in the atmosphere.
Most methods of removing carbon dioxide from a stream of gas require higher concentrations, such as those found in the flue emissions from fossil fuel-based power plants.

Not everything is bigger in Texas — some things are really, really small. A group of engineers at The University of Texas at Austin may have found a new material for manufacturing even smaller computer chips that could replace silicon and help overcome one of the biggest challenges facing the tech industry in decades: the inevitable end of Moore's Law.

The Scientist
Neuroscientist Gregor Pilz of the University of Zurich has watched stem cells turn into neurons in the brains of young, living mice — a feat that not too long ago was considered impossible. His latest experiments add to those earlier observations, showing that mice have yet another population of self-renewing stem cells in their brains and some of those cells are much longer-lived than the first ones he documented.
