Whether you're a first-time author or someone who's been published in numerous journals, there many benefits to having research featured in SLAS Discovery and SLAS Technology. In this month's From the SLAS President column in Electronic Laboratory Neighborhood, Alan Fletcher highlights both journals' 2019 success and outlines what's to come in 2020 and 2021. "It takes the talent and scientific know-how of nearly 1,000 volunteers each year to publish SLAS's two scientific journals, SLAS Discovery and SLAS Technology. This includes authors, reviewers, Editorial Board members and editors — all with the goal of presenting the very best in peer-reviewed research for our specialized audience."

A method for the synthesis of substituted cycloalkanes was developed using diols and secondary alcohols or ketones via a cascade hydrogen borrowing sequence. A non-noble and air-stable manganese catalyst (2 mol %) was used to perform this transformation. Various substituted 1,5-pentanediols (3–4 equiv) and substituted secondary alcohols (1 equiv) were investigated to prepare a collection of substituted cyclohexanes in a diastereoselective fashion.

A team of researchers from City University of Hong Kong and Karolinska Institutet has recently developed a new protein that can help increase the targeting accuracy in the genome editing process. It is believed that it would be useful for future gene therapies in humans, which require high precision.
CRISPR-Cas9 is a promising gene-editing technology which could have wide applications, from curing many genetic diseases to developing drought-tolerant crops.

A single shot of an experimental gene therapy could one day help stall the development of multiple age-related diseases. George Church's lab at the Wyss Institute of Harvard University has already tested it in mice, and last month a startup called Rejuvenate Bio — founded in 2018 by Church and his former researcher Noah Davidsohn — began a pilot study testing the gene therapy in dogs. If all goes well, they hope that humans will be next.

In hospitals, doctors often advise patients to take calcium supplements. But does the calcium get into the cells that need it? Until recently, it's been hard to tell.
But now, Prof. Dong Wenfei's research group from the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology has developed a new type of fluorescent carbon dot that can effectively detect calcium levels in cells.

Bacteria don't have mouths, so they need another way to bring their fuel into their bodies. New research from Washington University in St. Louis reveals how one such bacteria pulls in electrons straight from an electrode source. The work from the laboratory of Arpita Bose, assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, was published in the scientific journal mBio.

Ervebo, an Ebola vaccine from Merck, received marketing approval from the European Commissio, marking the first such vaccine to reach the world's markets.
"Finding a vaccine as soon as possible against this terrible virus has been a priority for the international community ever since Ebola hit West Africa five years ago," said Vytenis Andriukaitis, the European Commission official in charge of health and food safety.

Tumors are hogs, gobbling nutrients to fuel their runaway growth, and for decades researchers have tried to develop drugs that cut off their food supply. A study shows that an updated version of a failed cancer drug can not only prevent tumor cells from using an essential nutrient, but also spur immune cells to attack the growths.
"It's a pretty striking paper," says cancer biologist Ralph DeBerardinis of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who wasn't connected to the study.

The FDA has placed a second clinical hold in as many years on Solid Biosciences' Phase I/II trial for its lead candidate, the Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene therapy SGT-001, the company acknowledged, sending the company's shares plunging about 70%.
The latest clinical hold came after Solid told the FDA and the Data Safety Monitoring Board of the IGNITE DMD trial (NCT03368742) that one of three patients dosed at the high-dose cohort of 2E14 vg/kg suffered a serious adverse event that was considered to be related to the study drug.
