Virtual reality is the latest frontier in what's been a nearly constantly evolving industry of medical imaging.
When Dr. Mark Plunkett began his pediatric cardiology practice in the mid-90s, the main diagnostic tool he used was cardiac catheterization, then echocardiography.
More recently, CT and MRI imaging have advanced to the point that the data could be reconstructed into three-dimensional images — a development that led to a partnership between Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center and the National Institute of Health to create a digital exchange where doctors and hospitals can freely access these images.

With new virtual reality simulations, medical students can practice procedures and gain confidence in their craft faster. Since receiving an $878,000 grant from Ohio University's Innovation Strategy program, the Immersive Media Initiative team was able to begin work on a handful of virtual reality projects. Last summer, the Immersive Media Initiative shot 360-degree footage of emergency room patients. This was their first project in virtual reality healthcare. With the ER simulation, medical students have a chance to observe more of the process.

Physicians use the 3-D models to determine the least invasive procedure for a particular case, practice techniques in advance of an operation, and educate their patients, who can actually hold replicas of their body parts in their own hands.
