A new report from the Center for Patient Safety highlights the 10 safety topics that will move "EMS Forward" in 2016.
EMS, as a profession, is called to change in light of new laws and a changing health care system.
The 10 areas in the report reflect topics identified as risks to patient and provider safety as well as topics forecast to be of greater concern in EMS in 2016. The report is not an all-inclusive list of safety concerns but rather a tool to complement current patient safety and quality programs and provide resources.

As we welcome each new year, we also anticipate remarks from the president during the annual State of the Union Address, which often outline our achievements as a nation in the past year and our focus for the new year. The 2016 State of the Union speech by President Barack Obama was particularly anticipated by viewers this year, given that it was his last.
Ever wondered what the state of our nation's health is?

Question: What's the difference between virtual and augmented reality?
Virtual reality and augmented reality use similar technologies but offer slightly different experiences and usage scenarios.
We’ve developed a VR training tool that enables trainee surgeons to become immersed in another surgeon’s reality and gain their perspective of a recorded operation.

Living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia is a confusing, frustrating and difficult experience.
While it's impossible for someone without dementia to truly experience its effects, the Alzheimer’s Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay and Districts hosted a simulation that comes as close as possible to that experience.
Caregivers, students, police officers, volunteers and members of the media were invited to try the "12 Minutes in Alzheimer's Dementia" experiment, and attempt to walk in an Alzheimer's patient's shoes.

Something is missing from the equine clinical laboratories at vet schools these days, and you'd notice it right away. What's missing are the horses.
Between pressure to sacrifice fewer animals for educational use, new opportunities from computer-based education and the development of mechanical simulation learning tools, the labs where vet students practice their manual skills and learn their anatomy are a different place.

Becker's Hospital Review
Healthcare has no doubt made giant strides in patient safety in recent years: According to an HHS report released in December, hospital-acquired condition rates dropped 17 percent from 2010 to 2014, leading to 87,000 fewer patient deaths in hospitals. However, there is always room for improvement in the journey toward zero patient harm.
Several issues arose in 2015 that shed new light on patient safety threats.

Healthcare and nursing are collaborative by nature, and collaboration is fueled by communication. A collaborative modus operandi greases the wheels of healthcare, improves outcomes and ultimately impacts the "double bottom line" of people and profits.
Since two potentially powerful results of collaboration are satisfied staff and healthier patients, it behooves nurse leaders and healthcare administrators to champion collaboration and healthy communication as praiseworthy means to myriad positive ends.

The world's spookiest philosopher is Nick Bostrom, a thin, soft-spoken Swede. Of all the people worried about runaway artificial intelligence, killer robots and the possibility of a technological doomsday, Bostrom conjures the most extreme scenarios. In his mind, human extinction could be just the beginning. Bostrom's favorite apocalyptic hypothetical involves a machine that has been programmed to make paper clips (although any mundane product will do). This machine keeps getting smarter and more powerful, but never develops human values.

At a University of Central Florida lab, a high schooler, a pre-med student and an aspiring scientist work with Dr. Dinender Singla to create three-dimensional heart models that mirror a patient's real heart.
The research involves a small 3-D printer, which delicately stacks rows of blue and red melted plastic, following the guidance of images loaded onto a computer. And in this process, they each see their future goals and dreams coming to fruition right here in Central Florida.

Responding to a call, Palm Beach Fire-Rescue (Florida) firefighters rig an intravenous line to a mannequin and administer Fentanyl. From a monitor nearby, they can see the powerful pain reliever taking effect as it lowers the patient's heart rate. Along with a pulse, the $13,000 mannequin produces blood pressure and electrocardiography readings. When pumped full of air, it breathes.

Linking its emergency medical service teams with Colorado's state health information exchange has made a big difference in how first responders are able to assess, treat and sometimes follow up with patients, according to Richard Lewis, EMS bureau chief of the Denver-area South Metro Fire Rescue Authority. "We collect all the same information," he said. "We just don't store it the same way."
Now that 18 months have passed since initiating the project, Lewis said bigger effects are on the way.
