The SimMan 3G is an advanced patient simulator that displays neurological symptoms as well as physical ailments. "It's going to be excellent for teaching," said Tami Howard, RN, director of staff development and education at Marshall South. "Simulation is the wave of the future."

Holographic headsets are a central theme to augmented reality (AR) today, but the recent AR in Action Conference demonstrated the diversity of the field and the potential to include many more technologies to augment humans. The AR in Action Conference, held at the MIT Media Lab, expanded the definition of AR through a TED conference-like lens, delivering 70 diverse curated talks and 32 panels over two days to over 1,000 experts and practitioners in the field. The value of these holographic projection headsets was well represented with talks like the one by Harvard Medical School professor Jayender Jagadeesan, who spoke about surgical AR applications.

3-D printer provider, 3D Systems has expanded its Virtual Surgical Planning service to include a virtual planning technique for cranial and craniofacial procedures. The new feature, VSP Cranial, is 510(k) cleared for use in the operating room and will enable surgeons to create a virtual pre-surgical plan that can be instrumented with sterilisable, patient-specific 3-D-printed anatomical models, guides and templates.

Danville Area Community College trustees will consider the low bid for the purchase of a new manikin for the nursing program. DACC President Stephen Nacco said a donation through the DACC Foundation will fund the purchase of the new equipment. The features of the manikin include airway management, breathing assessment, palpitations and auscultation, fluid resuscitation, echo cardiogram interpretation, defibrillation and ultrasound assessment. The manikin will be able to be integrated with existing training equipment.

They're also getting hands-on experience, but they’re not getting it in a traditional classroom. Methodist Health System donated 7,000 square feet of its campus on W. Campbell Road to the Richardson Independent School District. Students enrolled in the health science program say practicing in a wing of the hospital makes it feel more real.
