Southwestern Michigan College just opened its new Nursing and Health Education Building with the start of the spring semester.
The $9.6 million project, which took about a year and a half to complete, more than doubled the size of the nursing building, originally built in 1970, to more than 29,000 square feet.
Among the facility’s features are two eight-bed skills labs where nursing students learn how to do things such as take blood pressure and insert IVs.

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. In the state of Louisiana specifically, diagnosed strokes are exceptionally high – rising from 1,000 in 2015 to 1,648 in 2017. While the stroke rate is rising in Louisiana, the rate of stroke deaths overall in the U.S. is actually lowering – the reduction, the American Stroke Association notes, can be attributed largely to medical treatment advances.
