FROM THE DESK OF THE SSH MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
|
SSH offers an incredible online platform to its members and also members of our Affinity Groups. This online connected community, SimConnect can be utilized 24/7 by our members all over the world. SimConnect, through the participation of our members, offers valuable resources in all areas of simulation, including discussion boards, libraries, a directory and more.
We understand there are many different areas to navigate if you have never been in SimConnect before. To help with this Ashley Grossman, SSH Membership Coordinator, has created a series of short tutorial videos focused on specific aspects of the site. These videos can be viewed here: https://www.ssih.org/simconnect
To stay connected on the go, download the SimConnect app. Just search “SimConnect” in your app store – it is available on iOS and Android platforms.
We have also recently created a COVID-19 Simulation Discussion Affinity Group community on SimConnect that is open to both SSH members and non-members. It is an open forum in which anyone in simulation can share ideas and ask questions specifically related to simulation and COVID-19. To join this group, you just need to have an SSH account! If you have any questions or are interested in joining the group, please email Ashley at agrossman@ssih.org. ~ Kathryn Elliott Pullins

Mathematical model predicts patient outcomes to adaptive therapy
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute via Medical Xpress
Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy among men in the United States. Despite improved treatments for prostate cancer, many patients with advanced disease eventually develop drug resistance. Researchers in the Center of Excellence for Evolutionary Therapy believe that adaptive treatments based on evolutionary principles may be an effective approach to prostate cancer treatment by preventing the development of drug resistance and prolonging patient survival.

Next Generation Harvey realistically simulates nearly any cardiac disease at the touch of a button by varying blood pressure, pulses, heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds. Harvey is the longest continuous university-based simulation project in medical education, and no other simulator presents cardiac bedside findings at the level of detail and fidelity found in Harvey.

VR effective substitute for nurse-physician communication team training
MD Mag
Sok Ying Liaw, Ph.D., and a team of colleagues from Singapore implemented training using tools to evaluate a virtual reality program versus live simulations on medical and nursing students’ communication skill performances and teamwork attitudes. The investigators found that there was no inferiority of team training using VR when compared with live simulations.
