FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP |
Every month since July 2018, SSH membership has broken the 4000 member mark. I ran a preliminary report for the April numbers and am happy to say we will have another month over the 4000 member mark! As I reflect on the steady growth of membership for SSH, I think one of the areas in which membership is growing is the category of the Bulk/Institutional membership. This category offers a discount on a full membership for individual employees to any organization that has 10 or more employees as SSH members. This category is growing in two ways; first, more companies are taking advantage of the discount as they recognize the value of SSH membership for their employees. Second, the companies that have been purchasing these types of memberships are steadily increasing the number of employees that receive an SSH membership.
Take a look at your employee roster. If you have 9 employees with an SSH membership, it won’t cost you anything to add that 10th employee! And, you will get the added bonus of a single, annual bill. You will also get to pick year to year which employees receive the membership. So, you can make changes in the memberships every year that will allow you to accommodate any staff changes your organization may have. And, because of the way we structure these memberships, you can use them as you need them, so they are good for distribution for an entire year!
If you would like to look at consolidating your employee memberships into a Bulk/Institutional membership, just contact Ashley Grossman, SSH Membership Coordinator, at agrossman@ssih.org. ~ Kathryn Pullins
SSH will have a booth at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Patient Safety Congress in Houston, Texas on May 15 – 17. SSH Staff, Judy Larson, Director of Meetings and Exhibits, and Kathryn Pullins, Director of Membership, will be manning the booth. Stop by to participate in the Room Of Errors, a contest designed to challenge attendees to find the errors. Participate in the contest and enter a drawing to win a really cool prize. The scenario we use in the booth will be written by Chad Epps, SSH Past President. A huge shout out to Dr. Epps for his assistance again this year! Also, we will partner with IHI for the second year in a row to run the booth and put on the fun contest with IHI with Allison Perry, Project Director for IHI as our point person. Her help in managing the logistics of the whole thing is invaluable and we couldn’t do it without her! Stop by to participate in the contest and pick up a button for Healthcare Sim Week 2019!
The SimOps 2019 Planning Committee is still accepting course proposal submissions and SimVentors Showcase entries. SimOps 2019 will be held July 17-19, 2019 at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia. SUBMIT CONTENT

Healthcare Dive
While digital health funding has boomed, the amount of venture capital deals with early stage medical device companies has trended downward. According to data from Vantage, there were fewer than 200 medtech venture rounds in 2018, despite overall funding dollars holding relatively steady. The new accelerator, part of the Mayo Clinic ASU Alliance for Health Care, aims to provide an opportunity for companies that have already raised at least $500,000 in seed funding to gain greater access to investors and go-to-market opportunities.

The Food and Drug Administration has cleared Current Health’s wireless wearable remote patient monitoring (RPM) platform for chronically ill individuals, allowing care teams to track their patients’ health in real-time and act proactively when something looks off. Current’s wearable, a palm-sized, artificial intelligence-powered device worn on a person’s upper arm, was granted Class II clearance recently for post-acute care and is now available for both hospital and at-home use.

How many times have you seen a headline around “smart clothing” or “wearable tech” and you’ve been disappointed that the product doesn’t look so wearable at all? Personally, I don’t have enough fingers to count the amount, quite honestly. Despite being sold as "wearable", much of the time, wearable tech is cumbersome and awkward, and never really works as intuitively as you'd like.

Digital twin technology is a cost-effective way for operation-based businesses to replicate a physical asset in a way that drives innovation. Before investing in resources for real-world implementation, digital twin technology can simulate plans and formulate what-if scenarios. The virtual model pairs with the physical world and analyzes the data captured.

Healthcare organizations may be fascinated with the potential for artificial intelligence and machine learning to revolutionize care delivery, but they may not be ready to jump into investments just yet, according to a new survey by Definitive Healthcare. Tech-driven trends such as artificial intelligence, wearable devices and even continued electronic health record optimization are not as crucial to providers as the fundamental problem of staying financially solvent in the era of megamergers, consumerism, and constant consolidation.

To test the capabilities of emergency personnel should a hazardous spill occur in the Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, area, a full-scale training exercise was conducted recently. The simulation encompassed local fire departments, police, dispatch, EMS, correctional staff and hospitals, according to Jim Hackett, Crawford County Emergency Management director. In the center of the city, from Parrish Street north to Broadway Street, west of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks, the scenario simulated was that a railroad car derailed near the correctional institution’s boiler plant and was leaking anhydrous ammonia.

When a school is considering automated medication dispensing cabinets or carts (ADCs) for use in simulation education, they typically want to use the type of ADCs that are found in their local hospital system. This way, students will easily be able to adapt to real-life medication dispensing once they graduate and start their careers. However, there is more to consider when investing in ADCs for education. Automated medication dispensing carts and cabinets are complex products with many different combinations of software.

The population is ageing, and more people need health support, which is having a big impact on the overall spend in medical care. Due to this situation, authorities and health insurance companies are putting more emphasis on prevention, health awareness, and lifestyle. In general, it is not just about exercising more or better nutrition intake — there is more interest in monitoring certain vital body parameters. This is the reason why companies in the smart and health watch business have seen their revenue grow over the last few years.

Have you ever thought about what it takes to get a synthetic uterus through the TSA screening line at the airport? Neither had a healthcare design team of freshmen from Duke University — until we handed our documentation to the agents at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, scrambling to explain "Why, Sir," they were carrying bundles of pink gel and latex tubing in their backpacks.

Gastroenterology and Endoscopy News
“Fortnite,” not quite, but pitting endoscopy learners against one another may be a good way to train. Novice endoscopists who underwent simulation-based training with a “gamified” element outperformed their peers who didn’t have the spur of competition during their first two live colonoscopies, the researchers reported. Dr. Samir Grover, an assistant professor of medicine and the director of the gastroenterology program at the University of Toronto, said some clinicians may find the results of the study counterintuitive to what some believe.
