FROM THE DESK OF DIRECTOR OF CONTINUING EDUCATION |
IMSH 2020 Call for Content NOW OPEN!
Content proposals are now being accepted for the 20th Anniversary Meeting of International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). The Planning Committee is accepting content in the following formats:
- Course Proposals (Includes SSH Interest Group Content offering CEUs)
- Research Abstracts
- SimVentor Entries
- Government-funded Projects and Initiatives
The Planning Committee for IMSH 2020 is hard at work creating more than a celebration of where we’ve been. They are working to develop a robust educational and scientific program to include best practices, new findings, innovations and technological advancements for our work that keeps patients at the center of all we do. While our future vision for healthcare simulation continues to evolve, the reason for our work hasn’t changed. Patients will continue to be the central focus for our work. As we look to inspire the next generation of simulation professionals, it is imperative we keep patients at the core of our efforts.
NOTE: Course Proposal Submissions
NEW for IMSH 2020 is the manner in which educational course content is categorized. This year, the content tracks are specific to the intended audience for the topic. As you choose the category of your presentation, consider who best would benefit from the material.
The intended audience categories chosen for this year’s meeting are:
- Administrators - Those with oversight of the administrative functions of the simulation program
- Educators - Those involved in training faculty or teaching simulation
- Innovators - Those innovating new approaches or technologies in simulation
- Operations Specialists - Those managing the operations of simulation center programming
- Researchers - Those conducting research in simulation
Keywords will be used to further categorize the significant topic(s) of your presentation. (Refer to keywords list for all available options)
All submission portals will close June 12th, 2019

SSH will have a booth at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Patient Safety Congress in Houston, Texas on May 15 – 17. SSH Staff, Judy Larson, Director of Meetings and Exhibits, and Kathryn Pullins, Director of Membership, will be manning the booth. Stop by to participate in the Room Of Errors, a contest designed to challenge attendees to find the errors. Participate in the contest and enter a drawing to win a really cool prize. The scenario we use in the booth will be written by Chad Epps, SSH Past President. A huge shout out to Dr. Epps for his assistance again this year! Also, we will partner with IHI for the second year in a row to run the booth and put on the fun contest with IHI with Allison Perry, Project Director for IHI as our point person. Her help in managing the logistics of the whole thing is invaluable and we couldn’t do it without her! Stop by to participate in the contest and pick up a button for Healthcare Sim Week 2019!

A 5G revolution is imminent and is going to give an explosive boost to the digital transformation of healthcare. The fifth generation of wireless technology has the capacity to carry a massive number of connections at mind-blowing speed, which will impact mankind on many levels — healthcare is only one of the sectors to experience significant disruption. In the U.S., a small number of 5G networks have already launched, but these will not reach most areas until 2020. Estimates say that by 2023, over 30% of North American mobile connections will be on a 5G network.

A simulation developed by researchers shows just how quickly measles can spread if a community doesn't have a high vaccination rate. FRED, A Framework for Reconstructing Epidemiological Dynamics, was developed by the Public Health Dynamics Laboratory in the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh to simulate epidemics, such as a measles outbreak. The researchers showed how an outbreak can occur from just a single case of measles in several U.S. cities, including Columbus, Ohio.

Nowadays data are being collected and shared on all kinds of things, such as what cat videos you watch, how many cat videos you post on Facebook, and whether you are a cat. But what about data on which patients are carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria? After all, antimicrobial resistance made the World Health Organization's (WHO's) list of 10 threats to global health in 2019. Would it be helpful to have a database of patients in a region carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so that healthcare facilities can take the proper precautions when such patients get admitted or transfer facilities?

Seven years ago, when Dr. Naresh Trehan of Delhi’s Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (he’s now chairman and managing director of Medanta) used a robotic arm with an endoscopic camera attached that could provide a 3D image of organs, the news was received with a sense of awe. Today, cardiac surgeons routinely use 3D printers to generate replicas of the hearts of patients to strategize for complex procedures.

Digital Health Age
A new interactive healthcare service is launching with the aim of tackling poor quality, publicly available health information, such as that found online. Cognitant Group has launched a digital health service that allows patients to view information recommended or ‘prescribed’ by their doctor, nurse or pharmacist. The service uses VR tutorials and 3D experiences to provide explanations about health, disease and treatment. It is available for patients to view on smartphones and other devices, including virtual reality headsets.
