Then, the students left grad school behind. For the next hour, the students immersed themselves in chaotic, sometimes wrenching hospital scenarios that included an emergency room; a quiet patient room where a woman lay dying; and physical therapy consultation with an ornery fall victim.

Patient care scenarios provide an opportunity for learners to apply classroom material and isolated skill practice in realistic situations. The NREMT now requires paramedic students to demonstrate competency in scenarios that cover a variety of topic areas over the course of the program, and the new NREMT Psychomotor Competency Exam includes a patient care scenario. Scenarios can also be used to engage learners in continuing education to cover required competency areas, implement new protocols or roll out new equipment.

As she broke the news, Goldrath was conscious of not only her words but also her body language: Was she leaning in, looking the patient in the eye and expressing empathy?
