FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF CERTIFICATION |
More testing centers! Spanish translation for CHSE! CHSOS-A! It is hard to know which one to share first—all of this is great news.
Expanding testing centers around the world: we are gaining access to the Prometric testing network. This means that you will have access to more than 1,000 additional testing sites around the globe to be able to take your CHSE and CHSOS exams. This expansion should be happening anytime, so keep an eye on our website, www.simcertification.com for information.
Translating CHSE into Spanish: this is the first foray into translating our exams, and we are very excited about it (as are many of you). This is a multi-month process that is managed by our partner in test development (Schroeder Measurement Technologies, Inc.). We are focused on translating the CHSE exam first and are working with our SSH affiliates to accomplish this work. Stay tuned for more details, we will be sharing launch date and other details as they come into focus.
And time for CHSOS-A: the working group for creating and launching this portfolio-based certification is beginning their work. This will mirror the CHSE-A certification in many ways and will recognize those who are advanced in the Operations Specialist role. Think you are ready? Make sure you have achieved your CHSOS first, this is one of the eligibility criteria!
Did you know? Each item on our exams (and practice exams) goes through a rigorous process of development and review—which means that typically, under the guidance of our test development experts, 15-20 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from the healthcare simulation community have created, revised, reviewed, and revised (many times) every single question in a many-step process that you see on the exams? Item-writing and development…not for the faint of heart, and not just something that was thrown together!
Lots happening in certification, be sure to keep up! ~ Andrew Spain
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at EVMS next week for the SSH SimOps conference!

The simulation centre looks and feels like a real hospital with a maternity ward and operating room, but not all of its patients are human. Some are modern, hi-tech training dummies, capable of simulating facial expressions and emotional states, as well as the symptoms of ailments. The robotic simulations are thought to improve medical and nursing students' critical thinking and communication skills, as well as preparing them for the empathetic component of healthcare.

One of the fundamental roles of government is public safety. It’s why there are police and fire departments, traffic signals and water treatment plants. In addition to the day-to-day elements of ensuring a safe community, they also train and prepare for the worst. They've seen time and again locally and around the world the destruction to life and property that floods, fires and blizzards can cause. And unfortunately, they’ve seen the devastation that can be inflicted on a community through acts of violence.

For 14 years, through trial and error, the audiovisual consulting and implementation team at B-Line Medical has established simulation center audiovisual design best practices. Too often, a significant amount of time and money is invested to create a simulation center that is less than ideal operationally for the simulation experts responsible for its day to day activities. When creating a simulation center design, it’s critically important to address all work-flow logistics such as: audio capture acoustics, simulation equipment storage, movement and setup, debriefing flexibility that accommodates participants when the center is at maximum capacity, and student and faculty access (both locally and remote). Virtual reality offers learners an unprecedented opportunity to access environments that may previously have been closed to them, explore new ways of doing things, and learn through experience and play. For industry, there is the potential to quickly develop more ‘work-ready’ employees and for colleges, VR can free up capacity and allow trainers more one-on-one time to focus on skills development. There is increasing solid evidence regarding the benefits of immersive learning experiences.

The BMJ Opinion
The narratives we share about ourselves and others are an integral part of our everyday lives. They are the medium through which we communicate, celebrate, and educate, providing a common currency that has the potential to be accessible to all. However, despite the repeated sharing of health and illness accounts around the world on a daily basis, the meaningful involvement of patient narratives in the education and regulation of healthcare professionals is perhaps yet to be fully realized.

Modern Healthcare
Today’s healthcare system faces immense challenges—from a shortage of physicians, to millions of people lacking access to care, to the burden of chronic diseases with no cure. Ensuring that the next generation of doctors learn and train in ways that will enable them to meet the demands of a rapidly changing healthcare environment is critical as we prepare them to care for the nation’s growing, aging and more diverse population. America’s medical schools, teaching hospitals, and research institutions—known collectively as academic medicine—are working to do just that.

There are millions of Texans who identify as LGBT and thousands who identify as transgender. There is still significant discrimination against members of these populations—and significant health disparities. We need to have increased awareness and education on LGBT health issues (also sometimes written as LGBTQI+ for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and others) across the health professions. Studies in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and other health professions show a lack of training in the issues unique to LGBT patients.

Next Generation Harvey realistically simulates nearly any cardiac disease at the touch of a button by varying blood pressure, pulses, heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds. Harvey is the longest continuous university-based simulation project in medical education, and no other simulator presents cardiac bedside findings at the level of detail and fidelity found in Harvey.

Change is a constant in healthcare. With change, of course, comes disruption, new learning curves, and even potential patient risk. In the context of our mission of helping save lives, we believe that simulation is an optimal means for mitigating the impact of change. Through simulation, healthcare practitioners can train in realistic circumstances before ever taking into their care a human life. Get your free eBook

Created in 1780, the world’s first pedometer was developed using an earlier mechanism of a self-winding watch. Technology to ensure we meet those all-important 10,000 steps has come a long way since then, but the wearable technology market for health and fitness is constantly looking for new materials, to continue development and innovation. Dubbed as the ‘year of wearables’, 2014 witnessed a surge in wearable technology for health applications and, since then, the rate at which products are released has not slowed down.

Fortunately, it only took seconds for the drill to spin into spongy, simulated flesh before clunking against bone. On the battlefield, gaining access to bone marrow to provide life-saving fluids could be the difference between life and death – a technique that members of the 402nd Forward Surgical Team learned during a recent training session at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts. Soldiers in the Army Reserve unit from Fort Devens watched intently as Mary O’Connell, a peri-anesthesia nurse educator, showed them how to perform an intraosseous infusion with the drill and a hand-held device.

Consumers are willing to utilize medical wearables to overcome barriers to seeing a physician, including distance and cost, according to a recent survey by VivaLNK. The survey reveals that of 100 participants ages 40 and over, 64% said they would utilize a wearable health monitoring device if it meant it could reduce the number of times, they had to physically visit a doctor or hospital.
