To combat the substance use epidemic, quality evidence-based substance use training for healthcare providers is critical to identify at-risk patients earlier and intervene to provide appropriate care. With Kognito’s screening and brief intervention simulations, health professionals and students of health professions can practice these challenging conversations with virtual patients to increase their preparedness and ability to effectively execute screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment.

Simulation-based education (SBE) is increasingly endorsed as an educational strategy. It allows health-care professionals to practice clinical skills within a safe learning environment, and requires devices for simulation or simulated patients, trained teachers, and an appropriate environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate perceptions of participants on SBE and an SBE workshop.

Seminole State College News
In the field, public safety officials and health care providers face a series of challenges on an ever-changing landscape. Responding to these challenges quickly and appropriately is what they are trained to do for the safety of the community. Seminole State College of Florida’s Center for Public Safety organized a massive inter-department simulation recently to present students with the opportunity for hands-on training.

The Claytor Lake, Virginia, rescue drill was about to begin and the organizers looked with satisfaction at the gruesome scene they had set by the water’s edge. Stephanie McKinney, the preceptor (a leader and instructor) of Carilion Clinic’s Life-Guard 10 helicopter team, sported a simulated leg wound that included a bloody-looking mock bone protruding from the skin. “It’s an open tibia fracture,” McKinney explained cheerfully. She and the other members of the training team did this so often that they needed only a few minutes of plaster and makeup daubing to produce an assortment of ersatz injuries, she added.

Becker's Hospital Review
Boston Children's Hospital has implemented neurological teaching robots to help train medical staff on various procedures before they operate on real patients, CBS affiliate WBZ reports. The hospital's engineering team uses 3D-printed materials as well as different types of silicone to create the medical robots. "You have simulators that appear human, that feel human, bleed and do all of the right things that you can actually do surgery on but underneath they're robotic," said Greg Loan, senior simulation engineer at Boston Children's Hospital, according to WBZ.

How do you learn to take a blood sample without causing discomfort to your first patient? You can if your first patient is a mannequin. Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania's, St. Luke's University Hospital Bethlehem's new Motion Medical Education Lab has lifelike mannequins on a lab that can been rolled up to those who need training rather than force new medical staff or caretakers to come to a St. Luke’s facility. The 34-foot-long mobile simulation lab was unveiled at a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Wednesday afternoon.

Lying on the table, surrounded by two nurses, a woman shrieks in pain, "There's something horribly wrong!" She's in labor, and nurse Shanti Fernandez is helping to deliver her baby. While another nurse assures her that everything will be fine, Fernandez pulls out a healthy baby boy — made of silicone. Behind a glass window, Miami Dade College nurses control the movement of the mannequin on the table, named Victoria, and her baby's movements from a set of computers..

Change is a constant in healthcare. With change, of course, comes disruption, new learning curves, and even potential patient risk. In the context of our mission of helping save lives, we believe that simulation is an optimal means for mitigating the impact of change. Through simulation, healthcare practitioners can train in realistic circumstances before ever taking into their care a human life. Get your free eBook

CIO Applications
Intermountain Healthcare uses simulation facilities and technology to train caregivers throughout their Utah-based, not-for-profit system that includes 24 hospitals, 160 clinics, 38,000 employees, a Medical Group with 2,300 employed physicians and advanced practice clinicians, and, a health insurance company called SelectHealth. The purpose of simulation at Intermountain is to enhance patient safety and improve clinical outcomes through hands-on scenarios that mimic real-life settings. Intermountain’s simulation training involves simulating realistic patient care scenarios so caregivers can practice and refine how they'd respond in a real situation.

Martinsville Bulletin
A crowd gathers around to watch the Averett University nursing faculty and staff examine the patient’s airway. The patient’s chest visibly rises and falls with each beat of his heart. His pulse can be felt in the usual locations. He responds to medicine just like any other human would. But this patient is different: his eyes are LED lights, controlled by a tablet and changed to represent different conditions such as jaundice or cataracts. The staff can change the mannequin’s gender and arrange different scenarios for students, all while tracking the patient’s condition and the students’ actions on the tablet.

Many of these are networked and they can be found everywhere in today’s hospitals. Depending on who you ask, in the U.S. there are, on average, either a handful or between 10 to 15 connected devices per bed, and keeping an eye on them is a difficult. “Our data shows that hospitals on average have lost track of 30% of their networked medical devices, making it much harder to protect them against hackers.
