A patient safety team has restructured their protocols for treating airway failure in such a way that the change has measurably improved staff confidence to handle airway emergencies and can serve as a model for other health systems. These changes came when the team at Hackensack Meridian Health encountered a serious safety event last year when a breathing tube failed and a patient required an emergency operation. About 10 percent of the life-threatening events that occur in hospitals involve problems with keeping patients' breathing airway functional, the researchers explained.

Using standardized patients, trained actors play the role of someone who may be at risk of taking their own life. “The standardized patients are an opportunity for students to practice not only the suicide assessment but how to therapeutically communicate with patients and be comfortable being present with them,” says Mary Wunnenberg, an assistant clinical professor at the Rutgers School of Nursing‒Camden.

It’s distressing for the patient and perhaps even more distressing for the parents: your child needs a blood test, but the phlebotomist has trouble locating his tiny veins, and is forced to stick him again and again. Researchers at Rutgers University say they may have found the solution: a “venipuncture robot.” The robot uses a combination of near-infrared and ultrasound imaging to find blood vessels, then creates a 3-D image of the vessels before sticking the patient with a needle.
