Practice makes perfect at Boston Medical Center's simulation center

Boston Medical Center (BMC), a 496-bed academic medical center, serves as the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. Both entities needed a collaborative space that could serve the medical school and hospital by offering simulation practices—the use of computerized mannequins that simulate real-life medical scenarios—in anesthesia, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, surgery, orthopedic surgery and nursing education.

 If you've ever been in a hospital, you may have noticed placards or posters that talk about the hospital's responsibility to the patient and the patient's responsibilities while at the hospital. Most of these center around treating the patient with respect and privacy and conversely with the patient treating the hospital and its employees with respect. But I think there is also a code of responsibility between the physician and patient in the clinic setting, outside of the hospital. Something more personal than just patient and hospital. I'm talking about the oft-referenced patient-physician relationship.

Largest neuronal network simulation to date achieved using Japanese supercomputer

By exploiting the full computational power of the Japanese supercomputer, K Computer, researchers from the RIKEN HPCI Program for Computational Life Sciences, the Okinawa Institute of Technology Graduate University (OIST) in Japan and Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany have carried out the largest general neuronal network simulation to date.
Massachusetts nurses calling for patient safety ballot initiative

An organization representing nurses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in calling for a ballot initiative to improve patient safety by establishing appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios and patient assignments, according to an announcement by the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United (MNA/NNU). The Patient Safety Act is the latest addition to a growing line of requests for legislation on the state and federal level aimed at protecting patients and improving care by more closely monitoring the number and responsibilities of nurses in the clinical environment.

Medical students come to grips with living doll

Tutors of the University of Sydney's School of Rural Health at Dubbo have been introduced to SimMan3G who lacks real heart but not the ability to complain about pain, gasp, have an allergic reaction, bleed and vomit.
The School of Rural Health has acquired the $130,000 simulation mannequin to help its medical students practice skills in a range of clinical situations involving the likes of chest pain, asthma and drug abuse.

Improving teamwork in operating room can boost patient safety

Improving communication and strengthening teamwork among cardiac surgery teams are among recommendations for reducing preventable mistakes in the cardiac operating room, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association.
The statement reviewed evidence-based research focused on communication within and between teams, the physical workspace and the organizational culture of the cardiac operating room and provides recommendations for improving patient safety. It is published in Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association.
