Saving a life can be hard enough, and doing it in the middle of a battlefield with bullets flying can seem nearly impossible. But military programs like the Medical Simulation Training Center at Fort Carson in Colorado are training military medics so they're prepared for almost every medical situation during combat. The MSTC is a program that uses lifelike mannequins as well as special effects to mimic real-life combat scenarios.

Early adoption of new and emerging technologies is a trend for many EMS professionals. There are times when those technologies fit into the gap perfectly, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for EKG transmissions or tablets for documentation. There are other times when employing the latest technologies is about trying to appear cutting edge, about trying to fit the square peg into the round hole such as using Twitter as a substitute for a mobile data terminal messaging incident locations to responding crews.

Doctors in Japan were perplexed for months over the case of a woman with leukemia who did not take to any of the treatments prescribed to her — then IBM’s Watson took over and solved the mystery in minutes.
The artificial intelligence system was able to conclude that the patient did not have the form of leukemia with which she initially was diagnosed, a form that required a different course of treatment, according to an article at the International Business Times.

It's beneficial to review events such as the Boston Marathon bombing terrorist incident that occurred in April 2013, as well as the recent terrorist incidents in Paris and Brussels, to determine if there are areas within an organized response that can be improved upon. Because there are many variable factors behind explosions, it's difficult to describe or predict a commonality to injury patterns outside of multiple, simultaneous casualties and, probably, a mass casualty scenario.

It's called mental imbalance for a reason. Sanity hangs, in part, in the gentle balance of chemicals strung together within regions of the brain in an intricate matrix.
In schizophrenia, the matrix is sharply jarred, debilitating the mind and triggering hallucinations. Now, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created an interactive model of that matrix to fast-track research and treatment of the tormenting disorder.

Harvard Business Review
In 1999 the U.S. Institute of Medicine released what would become a touchstone report, "To Err is Human," which estimated that between 44,000 and 98,000 people die in hospitals each year due to medical errors that could have been prevented. It brought the idea of building a safer health system to the forefront of the public’s mind. Since then, improving healthcare outcomes has become a central goal in everything from clinical training and research studies to government initiatives and political debate.

Junior doctors feel unprepared to deal with many of the human aspects of ethical and professional dilemmas. Equipping doctors to understand and navigate the emotion, stress, drama and uncertainties associated with moral decision-making in these areas is critical. There is an important gap in our understanding of how simulation can best prepare medical students and doctors for real life ethical encounters.

In hospitals, summer is the season when newly minted medical school graduates start their first year of residency, taking on patient care with little hands-on experience. For patients, that means a visit from a doctor who might look young and untested.
To make sure residents ask for help from a senior doctor, more hospitals are developing formal “escalation-of-care” policies with clear guidelines on when it’s time to call one. Residents may fail to ask for help due to overconfidence, lack of knowledge or fear of seeming incompetent, studies show.
