5:00 PM US Central Daylight Time (CDT)
Grant Objectives
Methodologically sound simulation-based research projects using quantitative, qualitative or hybrid approaches are sought. Studies that are both innovative and have strong potential for a positive impact on the simulation field are encouraged. The potential impact on the applicant’s career is also considered.
Applicant Eligibility
The main objective for the provision of these grants is to support novice investigators. Criteria for eligible investigators are as follows:
- Eligible applicants should have received no more than $10,000 in grant funding in the past.
- Eligible applicants must have less than five peer-reviewed publications as either first author or contributing author.
- Eligible applicants must have completed training in the past five years.
- Eligible applicants must have less than five years of research experience.
NOTE: Only one project submission will be accepted from each Principal Investigator.
Letters of Intent (LOI) must be submitted to the SSH Presenter Center via an electronic submission form. Submitters may cut and paste text into the form, but uploaded documents will not be allowed. Click below to access the SSH Presenter Center.

CTV News Montreal
While flight simulators have long been used to help pilots hone their skills, researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute have found another use. In a study published in The Journal of The American Medical Association, the researchers outlined how they’ve been using the technology, enhanced with artificial intelligence, to help surgeons practice their craft. “We actually took tumors out and measured their density and then put all that information into the simulator,” said study co-lead author Rolando Del Maestro.

B-Line Medical
Laerdal's acquisition of B-Line Medical further expands the capability expands the capability of SimCapture’s LMS for healthcare simulation. Seamless product integration allows educators to move from simulation events to debriefing in a single step, and in real-time. All key simulator events are present and synchronized with captured video and the patient monitor. In addition, simulator events are filterable, searchable, and annotated in the SimCapture session for rapid and efficient debriefing. SimCapture’s LMS also offers user management, portfolio creation, scheduling and enrollment, curriculum creation and tracking, and advanced scoring, reporting with grade releasing to learner portals. Virtual reality surgical training solution Osso VR is already impacting reality. A just-released study conducted by University of California, Los Angeles’s David Geffen School of Medicine shows that the surgical performance of Osso VR users “improved by 230% and their speed was 20% faster,” Dr. Justin Barad, CEO and co-founder of Osso VR, told MD+DI. “These are not subtle differences. Research is showing that VR users are faster and more competent.” He added that just after 30 minutes of VR training, the “effect is startling.”

Much like astronauts and pilots, doctors, it turns out, are increasingly running simulations in virtual worlds to sharpen their skills. Using a host of video game technologies, some of which employ the latest VR headsets and others that run on standard screens, surgeons and first-responders are able to practice all sorts of procedures without harming real patients. Now some of that technology is migrating back to astronauts, thanks to Level Ex, which makes medical video games for doctors and has just received a grant from the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) to build a virtual human simulation framework for NASA.

American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine
Pediatric palliative care (PPC) education is lacking in pediatric critical care medicine (PCCM) fellowships, despite the desire of many program directors and fellows to expand difficult conversation training. Simulation-based training is an experiential method for practicing challenging communication skills such as breaking bad news, disclosing medical errors, navigating goals of care and supporting medical decision-making.
