First, this is not an article aimed at scaremongering or sensationalizing headlines to evoke fear. Although not a topic discussed much since the Cold War, the possibility of a nuclear attack is sadly now part of the international conversation, and healthcare workers need to be educated.
The recent escalation of threats between the United States and North Korea has caused many to stop and ask: What would happen during a nuclear attack? Although the optimist in us all would keep the thought of "won't happen here" in the forefront, the pessimist/realist knows the possibility still looms.

A man suddenly slips and falls in the stands at a basketball game at Nicoson Hall. He groans in pain as concerned onlookers jump to action. Athletic trainers quickly take their places around the patient and begin calling out instructions to protect his spine and head.
The sequence of events that follows — from the ambulance ride to the emergency room to post-trauma care and communication between medical professionals — plays out in a tightly choreographed event as trained health sciences students at the University of Indianapolis participate in a simulated emergency response scenario.

Norma Jones was admitted to Tech General Hospital Wednesday after suffering a stroke, shortly after calling a neighbor to tell her she needed help.
Students from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing interviewed and interacted with Jones – all 10 of her – for eight hours, providing total patient care. If you end up in a hospital in Europe, you have a one in 20 chance of acquiring an infection while there. One of the leading causes is a lack of hand hygiene. Even though hospitals are filled with alcohol-based gel dispensers and advisory posters, they’re not working.
The conclusion of a recent pilot study may just have found the solution. Using a combination of depth cameras and computer-vision algorithms, a research team has tracked people around two hospital wards and automatically identified when they used gel dispensers.

Advances in emergency medicine require constantly updated training methods as our technologies become more advanced; however, these methods need to be relevant to the real-world experiences our students will be facing. Teaching in a simulated environment allows for information transfer and improved recall when these skills are performed in the field.
Simulation is not new to the educational realm. The military and the aviation sector have been using it for decades, because real-world training in both of these realms would be dangerous and expensive.

Likewise, more than half of healthcare professionals believe they have a special duty to protect patients under these circumstances.
