Becker's Hospital Review
One of the biggest challenges facing Houston and other Texas cities post-Hurricane Harvey will be rebuilding their medical and healthcare infrastructure, Vox reports.
While the total cost of damage may not be calculated for some time, lawmakers and researchers may look to previous data gathered after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. Kaiser Family Foundation researchers examined how New Orleans' healthcare infrastructure fared one year after Hurricane Katrina in a report published in the September 2006 issue of Health Affairs.

A plastic surgery research group has developed an augmented reality system that enables them to create 3-D simulations of the desired results of facial reconstructive procedures and project them over the patient's face during surgery, reports a study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery — Global Open®.
Drs. Koichi Ueda and Daisuke Mitsuno, and colleagues of Osaka Medical College, Japan, report the development and initial experience with an augmented reality system for evaluation of improvements of the body surface, a key consideration in plastic surgery.

Respect in healthcare is an ongoing conversation and struggle. Members of the healthcare team often feel undervalued or belittled in their position, which minimizes their role in patient-centered care.
Nurses frequently find themselves in the chasm of conflict, often feeling like they have no voice to help their patients or impact the care being provided. This often leaves them feeling disrespected. Although these interpersonal dynamics can seem benign, they routinely impact care negatively.

A new study from the Carrick Institute has revealed that distance learning programs that utilize online classrooms are just as effective in training medical professionals as traditional teaching methods.
The study offers strong evidence that online classrooms provide the same learning outcomes as more expensive and time-consuming in-person training programs. As a result, medical professionals will likely benefit from cheaper, more accessible training in the future — and better-educated doctors are good news for everyone.

Northwestern Medicine
Frontline caregivers practiced breaking bad news to simulated patients at an innovative new multisite seminar broadcast from Feinberg’s Simulation Lab in early August. The seminar uses active learning techniques to provide far more skill development than a simple lecture, according to course organizers. A recent survey of Northwestern Medicine healthcare providers found that education around improving communication skills was a key area for clinical caregivers. The course was not simply a way to make a patient momentarily more comfortable; rather, evidence shows strong associations between a healthcare provider’s communications skills and their patients’ outcomes.

Health Data Management
Health Data Management's Editor in Chief Fred Bazzoli writes: "Many years ago, I worked from a 30-story office building along Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago. We were a short stroll away from the Sears Tower (now called the Willis Tower).
Every year, there would be an annual fire drill, no doubt needed to meet insurance and Chicago Fire Department requirements. We’d see the posted notices in the lobby and next to the elevator doors, announcing the time. Once in our offices, a manager would let us know what we were going to do."
