FROM THE SSH MEMBERSHIP DESK |
Work on IMSH 2019 has been underway for over a year now, and we have some amazing things planned for our attendees! IMSH will be held in San Antonio, Texas January 26 - 30, 2019. Kathy Adams, Director of Continuing Education for SSH, reminded me today that we are still accepting submissions for the SimVentors Showcase. This is a combination of Serious Games, the Virtual Environment Arcade and Spectrum of Ideas. Think about submitting to participate in this very cool piece of content at IMSH. Check it out! http://www.ssih.org/Events/IMSH-2019/Program-Content/SimVentors

The Engineer
When casualties occur far away from hospitals, doctors on the ground often have to deal with situations with which they are not familiar. Currently, a system known as a telestrator is used, where a more experienced mentor in a hospital can draw on to a video screen, with the sketches and notes appearing simultaneously on the screen at the remote location. Many of us are most familiar with telestrators from sports broadcasting, where studio-based pundits draw on their screen to indicate the paths taken by footballers during a replay (or the paths they think they ought to have taken) which appears on our screens.

Daily Nurse
The Yale University School of Nursing recently celebrated the opening of a new simulation lab. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held recently, six months after the university broke ground on the project. University President Peter Salovey and Dean of the School of Nursing Ann Kurth were present to cut the ribbon and invite students, faculty members and guests to step foot into the new high-tech space. The new simulation lab was designed based on real-world healthcare settings where students can prepare themselves in simulated scenarios that they might encounter as nurse practitioners or midwives.

HIT Infrastructure
In a recent blog post, ONC officials emphasized the importance of planning when it comes to HIT backup and disaster recovery. “Unfortunately, the reality that an organization’s health IT systems will become unavailable or compromised is a matter of when, not if,” explained blog post authors Andrew Gettinger, M.D., and Justin Cross, M.D. The increasing dependence patients and clinicians have on digital tools makes data backup and the fast recovery of health systems critical to patient safety and the ability of clinicians to treat patients effectively.

The expansion of Evidenced Based Practice within the profession of nursing has resulted in efforts to redesign healthcare delivery to ensure safe, efficient and cost effective care. EBP unifies research evidence with clinical expertise. One of the primary functions of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree is to foster an environment that expands evidenced based practice.
According to the Institute of Medicine Report “To Err is Human: Building a Better Health System” (2009) medication errors is a leading cause of injury in health care, as well as the third leading cause of death in the United States. Nurses are an integral line of defense against medication errors and are fundamental advocates for patient safety. Ensuring that nurses students are adequately prepared to safely administer medications in the clinical setting is imperative to reducing medications errors.

Healthcare Simulation Week, Sept. 17-21, sponsored by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, celebrates healthcare professionals who use simulation, or lifelike manikins, in a safe, effective and efficient environment in which to practice their skills without practicing on live patients. Vermont Technical College’s Nursing Program has been using simulators since 2010 and will be hosting Simulation Open Houses featuring demonstrations of the simulators. Michelle Stearns, the Simulation Program Director for VTC’s Nursing and Allied Health Programs, said, “We use simulators to train students for high-risk patient situations, such as heart attacks. Patient safety is our number one goal.”

Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant and other AI-driven virtual assistants may be useful tools for ordering rideshares and controlling smart homes, but these conversational computing systems are not quite ready for prime time when it comes to giving medical advice or information. In a new study from the Journal of Medical Internet Research, a team of researchers found that popular conversational assistants frequently failed to understand simulated health-related scenarios, timed out before providing information, or delivered information and advice that would have resulted in varying degrees of patient harm if followed.

In a terrible accident, a man’s leg has been trapped between the doors of an elevator. The force of the closing elevators doors has snapped the bone in his left leg, creating a severe fracture. The patient is in immense pain and his injury is bleeding profusely. This was the scene confronting UNSW medical students as they faced off in SimWars, a competition designed to put the students’ teamwork and clinical skills to the test. Ten teams of four students were given a medical emergency that unfolded over 15 minutes in front of a live audience.

When it comes to health and longevity, being poor is expensive. Poverty's detrimental health effects are many and wide-ranging. From a lack of access to fresh vegetables and lack of money to pay for medications, to not having the time off to visit a doctor during business hours, the impacts can be subtle, cumulative and ultimately life-threatening. A 2017 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that residents of wealthy counties can have a life expectancy more than 20 years longer than those who live in impoverished counties.

The role of the pharmacist in U.K. hospital settings has changed significantly over the past 15 years, from a medication-centered to a more patient-centered role. Examples of this evolution and development include enhanced roles in medicines reconciliation, attendance on ward rounds, leading outpatient clinics and development of clinical specialty and prescribing roles. With the evolving role of pharmacists and the growing complexity of healthcare, there is a need for interventions and innovations to enhance both individual task and team performance.
