FROM THE DESK OF THE SSH ACCREDITATION DIRECTOR |
Hello! On behalf of myself, the SSH Accreditation Council, the SSH Accreditation Board of Review and the SSH Accreditation Reviewers, we would like to announce and congratulate the newly SSH Accredited and Reaccredited Programs. Over the course of the past couple of months, we have granted Accreditation to 20 programs, 15 of which were granted Full Accreditation and five of which were granted Provisional Accreditation. To date, more than 120 healthcare simulation programs in 13 countries have been accredited by the Society, making SSH the largest accrediting body in the field. Accreditation is a peer-reviewed examination of a simulation programs’ process and outcomes in assessment, research, teaching/education and/or systems integration.
Accreditation is a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that can take four to six months. Rewards include increased prestige for the center, better staff recruitment and development, improved patient safety and a competitive edge for community programs and grant funding.
A list of newly SSH Accredited and Reaccredited Programs can be seen here.
Interested programs should visit the Accreditation page for details; the deadline for the next accreditation review cycle is December 15, 2018.
Again, our heartfelt congratulations go out to all of our newly Accredited and Reaccredited Programs. Congratulations on such a tremendous accomplishment!

Escape rooms have reached the college classroom. To improve teamwork and communication between nursing and pharmacy students, the University at Buffalo School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have turned to the popular, mystery-themed game for interprofessional training. Rather than a prison cell or abandoned home, groups of students are placed in a simulation medical clinic. Their goal: Solve various puzzles to discover what ails their patient and provide the proper treatment.

Designing a nursing curriculum that integrates simulation comes with a fair number of challenges, not the least of which is simply obtaining the needed room and equipment to set up a functional simulation lab. But once those first purchases are out of the way, and you have some manikins to put in beds, what’s next?
A common scenario for nursing students is to have them practice the first five minutes of a patient crises. Whether the scenario takes place in a doctor’s office, emergency department or hospital room, it is meant to simulate the first five minutes spent with a patient experiencing a life-threatening complication. This can be constructed as a simulation for sophomore-level students experiencing their first clinical rotations.

Patient Management and Delegation gives nursing students the opportunity to earn 4-6 simulated clinical hours and also prepare for the NCLEX. As a 'Charge Nurse', students make critical choices and take on high levels of responsibility while learning to plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing resources to adequately prepare for real-life situations. The intensive care unit is a stressful place, and conflicts invariably arise. To better understand the relationships between physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and advanced practitioners, researchers created a conflict management education intervention. The study paid close attention to diagnosing the conflict type and cause, recognizing the internal dialogue, introducing conflict management modes used in conflict situations, and developing self and other awareness.

A team of scientists has successfully trained a new artificial intelligence algorithm to make accurate predictions regarding cognitive decline leading to Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Mallar Chakravarty, a computational neuroscientist at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, and his colleagues from the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, designed an algorithm that learns signatures from MRI, genetics and clinical data. This specific algorithm can help predict whether an individual’s cognitive faculties are likely to deteriorate towards Alzheimer’s in the next five years.

A study from the University of Minnesota Combat Casualty Training Consortium shows no significant differences between the use of live tissue models and synthetic training models in the learners’ stress level. The study being presented at the CHEST Annual Meeting 2018 in San Antonio shows that similar stress levels can be reached in the learner while learning critical medical procedures with synthetic models. This type of simulation may be able to reduce the use of live animals for training without sacrificing educational quality.

Fake people populate a group of labs inside the Behrakis Health Sciences Center on Northeastern’s Boston campus.
These fake people, which faculty and staff from the Bouvé College of Health Sciences refer to as human patient simulators, serve to reproduce a variety of human symptoms as a proxy for real-world healthcare scenarios.

Research among nurses reports fewer than 10 percent meet physical activity guidelines and eat a healthy diet. The American Nurses Association underscored this issue by declaring 2017 as the Year of the Healthy Nurse. A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior found that despite providing pedometers, a smartphone app, and access to a Facebook group, study participants were unable to change their diet and physical activity levels at the same time.

Modern Healthcare
As patient identification and matching errors continue to put patient safety at risk, industry groups say healthcare organizations should renew their focus on the problem and consider new ways to solve it. A heavier reliance on patients, perhaps by asking them to collect health information on their smartphones could be one solution, according to the Pew Charitable Trusts.
