FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP |
The IMSH Planning Committee has been working tirelessly for over a year now to make IMSH 2020 the best one yet. We are all really excited to be going back to San Diego, California for the 20th anniversary of IMSH. There is still time to register this week at the Early Bird rate for both members and nonmembers. Take a look at IMSH and register here: IMSH 2020.
If you are a nonmember, think about becoming a member before registering. We have extended the New Member offer from Simulation Healthcare Week through October 31st, 2019. It is $60 off a one year, full member membership. Just send me an email at kpullins@ssih.org and I will send you the code for this fabulous discount! Even if you are not coming to IMSH, you can still take advantage of the new member offer.
If you haven’t taken a look at the member benefits lately, do so here. SSH Member Benefits. You can also see the 7 minute video Ashley Grossman, SSH Membership Coordinator, and I have put together highlighting all the member benefits. While we are definitely not ready for prime time, we do think we did hit all the major points! 😊
Also, if you are thinking about buying several memberships for the employees of your organization, drop Ashley a line at agrossman@ssih.org. She can tell you about the discounts available to organizations that have 10 or more employees. We are also happy to talk with you via phone and in person at IMSH about membership, member benefits, interest groups, SimConnect, and anything else regarding SSH. We hope to see you soon! ~ Kathryn Pullins
The Grand Island Independent
Because of the time medical professionals spent in a 44-foot bus recently, patients in the Grand Island, Nebraska,-area should be receiving better medical care. Medical professionals and emergency responders from Grand Island and area communities spent 90 minutes inside the vehicle, which was parked outside CHI Health St. Francis. The truck and trailer comprise SIM-NE, which stands for Simulation in Motion — Nebraska. It is owned by the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Following experiences with their own son, who needed custom fit orthotics (the medical term for externally worn body braces and splints), Naveed and Samiya Parvez saw a need for more rapid and less invasive methods to provide custom fit devices to children with movement difficulties. When they learned about the potential for rapid customization via 3D printing in combination with simulation technologies, they approached design and simulation experts at Altair to explore whether the technology could be applied to the complex world of children’s orthotics.

An explosion, then smoke, screams and sirens. This was the scene at Widener University Schwartz Athletic Center recently as a simulated, yet intense, emergency disaster drill was held for 140 senior nursing students to test their classroom learning and skill sets. The School of Nursing collaborated with local and state emergency response agencies and medical centers across eight states and three counties, including the Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of Public Health Preparedness, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Surge Medical Assistance Response Team, Crozer-Chester Medical Center, the Chester Police Department and the Chester Fire Department.

Contemporary OB/GYN
Simulation has become much more popular. It’s a very popular subject because of the fact that within our field there is not a good way of being assured that surgeons are maintaining their skills. So, unlike pilots who have to, on a yearly basis, go through simulation training to make sure they’re maintaining their skills, once your OB-GYN has graduated from residency and gotten appointed to a hospital, there really isn’t a way to make sure that they maintain their skills over their career. We are in a field where there are many gynecologists, who maybe do on average a dozen surgeries a year, which to many wouldn’t be enough to actually maintain their skills.

Virtual reality field dressing simulation will help bridge the gap from the classroom to the field Thanks to a partnership between Idaho of Fish and Game and the Boise State College of Innovation and Design, learning to field dress a big game animal just got a lot easier. Brennon Leman and Dakota Kimble, who are part of Boise State’s Games, Interactive Media, and Mobile Program have been working with Idaho Fish and Game staff to develop a virtual reality simulation to teach new hunters how to field dress big game. Leman and Kimble recently put the finishing touches on the simulation, which will soon be piloted in a handful of Idaho hunter education classes.

Social work students at Arizona State University are gaining valuable experience without having to physically go anywhere. They’re doing so through a 3D video game called “Brianna’s World.” “It’s not the textbook kind of learning or the case study on a piece of paper that you read three paragraphs about,” said Judy Krysik, director of the ASU Center for Child Well-Being. “It’s a very engaging, different way of learning.”
