FROM THE DESK OF THE SSH DIRECTOR OF MEETINGS AND EXHIBITS |
As the weather gets cooler and leaves change colors and fall, the Meetings and Exhibits department of SSH kicks into high gear for our busy season. We are in full-forward mode with IMSH exhibit sales and logistics preparation to ensure a positive and memorable experience to all attending IMSH in San Antonio in January.
In addition to booth sales, sponsorships and scheduling Corporate Roundtable Learning Labs, logistics is a primary focus. Just what is logistics? Logistics are the "foundation blocks" of the attendee experience: everything from hotel sleeping rooms, ordering all the food and beverage (THOUSANDS of cups of coffee are consumed by IMSH attendees!), planning the details for a spectacular President’s Diamond Ball, directional signs ... literally every detail of the meeting.
Registration and exhibit sales are pacing to be the largest IMSH meeting yet, and we are looking forward to welcoming all of your to San Antonio for IMSH 2019 for an incredible experience!!

Conceptually understanding the potential hazards in a hospital room and being able to spot them are different skill sets. By focusing on situational awareness, the “patient safety room of horrors” — a safety-focused simulation — aims to help medical students and residents understand to identify potential hospital room mishaps before they happen. The room of horrors is used at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, a member of the AMA Accelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium.

Imagine yourself sitting outside your institution’s executive boardroom. You’re waiting to be called in to make your case for investing in medical simulation. You believe in the benefits of simulation. And, you’re passionate about what it can do. But at some point, you know you’ll be asked, “What’s the return on investment, the ROI?”
To stake your claim in that discussion, experts advise that you find common ground. This involves striking a balance between understanding what’s important to senior management, being clear about what you intend to deliver, and remaining firm about metrics that are important to solving the problem at hand.

Community health workers — trusted laypeople from local communities who help high-risk patients to address social issues like food and housing insecurity — can help reduce hospital stays by 65 percent and double the rate of patient satisfaction with primary care, according to new study results published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study, conducted by researchers in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, focused on chronically-ill low-income patients and U.S. veterans, and is the first multi-center randomized controlled trial to demonstrate these kinds of improvements resulting from a health system-based social intervention.

Actors performing for the camera, as entertaining as they might be, are not usually associated with solving important problems. But these Hollywood essentials are being put to use in one medical school’s effort to correct some of the shortcomings of text-based multiple-choice exams, performance on which have a big effect on the residency Match process. Several studies have found that exams consisting of multiple-choice questions — particularly the United States Medical Licensing Examination — are not the best or only evaluation method that should be used in postgraduate residency selection, according to Senthil Kumar Rajasekaran, M.D.

Medicine involves leadership. Nearly all physicians take on significant leadership responsibilities over the course of their career, but unlike any other occupation where management skills are important, physicians are neither taught how to lead nor are they typically rewarded for good leadership. Even though medical institutions have designated “leadership” as a core medical competency, leadership skills are rarely taught and reinforced across the continuum of medical training.
