FROM THE DESK OF THE SSH DIRECTOR OF CERTIFICATION |
1,722 healthcare simulationists, 33 countries. It is amazing to see how many have achieved certification (as of Sep 30). When the certifications were developed as a service to the healthcare simulation community, these numbers were only a guess. After just over six years, so many of you have become CHSE, CHSOS, or CHSE-A…this is fantastic.
And now, the new exams are coming. Work is on track for the worldwide release in time for IMSH. Thank you again to our Affiliates, Corporate Roundtable, subject matter experts (SMEs), and survey respondents who participated in the practice analysis to keep the certifications current. The Certification Council is very confident that the new CHSOS and CHSE exam blueprints represent the practice of healthcare simulation globally — we had input from over 50 countries!
If you are attending IMSH and want to test there, submit your application now. Go to www.simcertification.com to find the information you need, and then to submit your application. When approved, just select the IMSH location and choose a date and time that is available and fits your schedule. The website will have the official release date of the new exams and any other information you need.
Thank you all again and see you in San Antonio.

Rural patients are a high priority for St. Luke’s Health System, a Boise, Idaho-based not-for-profit care organization that treats patients located throughout the Gem State and eastern Oregon. Until recently, though, it lacked an efficient way to provide consistent care to that population. A few times a month, for instance, a nephrologist from the organization would drive two hours to meet with patients in one of the organization’s rural clinics for a day, then drive back home.

Healthcare disparities have been documented in the research literature for decades. Recently several EMS studies revealed disparities in the provision of care in the field based on patients’ race and gender. These results mirror those found across other healthcare settings and compel further research to better understand and eliminate such inequities. One direction is to integrate the principles of cultural humility into competency evaluations during healthcare professionals’ initial training.

A professor of surgery says students have spent so much time in front of screens and so little time using their hands that they have lost the dexterity for stitching or sewing up patients. Roger Kneebone, professor of surgical education at Imperial College, London, says young people have so little experience of craft skills that they struggle with anything practical. "It is important and an increasingly urgent issue," says Kneebone, who warns medical students might have high academic grades but cannot cut or sew.

Every medical organization's most important ongoing efforts include thorough evaluation of worker performance. Surprisingly often, though, the most helpful feedback often never gets delivered — because you, as an administrator, aren't aware of the key details your doctors, nurses and residents need to hear to make their work the best it can be. The good news: researchers have analyzed and identified a number of several specific feedback areas you can cover that will allow your healthcare workers to provide better and safer patient care. Here's what you need to know.

Several hospitals and health systems across the country will be participating in a massive mHealth study to determine whether an mHealth app and the Apple Watch can be used to improve care management and outcomes for patients undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery. The study, facilitated by Apple and Zimmer Biomet Holdings, aims to determine whether healthcare providers can use mHealth apps and wearables in a remote patient monitoring program that connects patients to their care teams before and after surgery.

As supraglottic airways proliferate and endotracheal intubation becomes less routine prehospitally, paramedics have a decision to make: Accept the erosion of proficiency accompanying rarely practiced skills or double down on dedication to maintain ETI currency. Those who choose the latter will find September’s Airway World webinar helpful. The topics — predicting difficult airways, preoxygenation, peri-intubation hypotension and video laryngoscopy — are tailored to hospital settings, but curious and astute EMS personnel should have no trouble picking out the applicable pearls.
