FROM THE DESK OF THE SSH ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR |
I’d like to first take this opportunity to share our thoughts and prayers with all those affected by the fires in California. We have dear friends and members who have lost homes and are making their way through this devastation. It is unfathomable to understand what you are going through at this time, but please know we are keeping you in our hearts.
As we move into this time of year, volunteers and staff are busy preparing for IMSH in San Antonio. While the workload can be overwhelming at times, for me it is also one of the most exciting times of the year. Ushering in the holiday season is, in itself, a wonderful time to celebrate with my family and friends, but I’m doubly excited because all the details of months of planning with this great team are coming together to create a fantastic event. But this would not be possible without the efforts of so many volunteer leaders, especially the planning committee, who begin building the content of this conference almost a year in advance. In fact, SSH has grown so much in the last few years that we have already begun planning for the 2020 IMSH meeting!
We’re excited for what looks to be a very innovative and well-attended conference in San Antonio. From new innovations such as the President’s Diamond Ball (black tie optional), the SimFit 5k run/walk, SimVentors Showcase, and Silent Disco to a curriculum of topics covering the full gamut of healthcare simulation. If you haven’t already registered, I encourage you to visit the IMSH 2019 web site (imsh2019.com), check out all that is going on this year, then register and reserve your hotel (filling up fast).
I hope to see you in San Antonio in a few months where we’ll all be redefining and redesigning. Enjoy the holidays!
~ Kevin Helm

This list might seem like it includes categories of action — it does. But it’s not just doing these things, but also communicating them that ties teams together. Communicating the items on this list plays a major role in scaling teams and leaders. With these things in place and communicated, it’s much easier to add people to a team, and then entire teams to an organization.

More than 200 million surgeries are performed worldwide each year, and recent reports reveal that adverse events occur during one in 10 surgical procedures.
