The Washington Post
It was harrowing, student nurse Lisa Bowen said.
Her patient was undergoing a medical procedure on his kidney. Shortly after Bowen attached an IV to give him blood, he began showing signs of a severe allergic reaction. "I can't breathe," he gasped. His arm felt itchy, he said, and his heart began racing. Bowen quickly detached the IV and called for a doctor.

Two organizations are demanding an investigation into what they say are unethical clinical trials that have required first-year medical residents around the country to work up to 28 hours or more at a time.
In letters sent to the Office for Human Research Protections at the department of Health and Human Services and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Medical Students Association and the watchdog group Public Citizen claim the studies exposed both the medical trainees and patients to a wide range of risks, including exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

Sens. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Gary Peters, D-Mich., have introduced a new bill to expand access to healthcare — especially in rural and underserved areas that would allow Medicare to cover additional telehealth services. The University of Surrey is participating in a project organized by the European Space Agency during which teams of European scientists will look at the effect of bed rest on the human body using a continuous bed rest protocol to simulate the effects of micro gravity in space.
In collaboration with the European Space Agency and funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, University of Surrey scientists will conduct a sleep study to investigate the health complaints shared by both astronauts and the elderly, such as bone and muscle loss, poor immune systems and increased inflammation.

Science 2.0
With over half a million robotic surgical procedures performed last year, this mode of surgery is quickly becoming a standard in the medical industry, particularly for urology and gynecology. Yet, no standard for training the surgeons behind the robot exists today. Since the start of robotic surgery, there has been a need for a universal training system to ensure surgeons are fully prepared to deal with any situation they encounter in the operating room.

A study initiated by the Cleveland Clinic has found that stroke patients can be treated more quickly and effectively if the first responder has telemedicine access to a neurologist. Researchers reported a door-to-CT rate of 13 minutes on average and a door-to-intravenous thrombolysis rate of 32 minutes on average through the use of a mobile stroke treatment unit.
