Simulation exercises help healthcare workers to prepare to confront Ebola

Countries in Africa have been working on improving their preparedness in the event of an Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization teams have provided simulated exercises in hospitals and technical training, for immediate emergency response and communication.
Mamo Jatta is a regional public health and surveillance officer in The Gambia and, like many people living near Ebola-affected countries, he is concerned the disease will enter his own country, "I recently visited the town where I grew up and wondered what would happen if Ebola were to hit us here, would we be ready for it?"

 Medical simulation participants often struggle to connect with human patient simulators, which may in part detract participants from achieving learning objectives. Significant effort is placed into setting the scene for participants, allowing them to explore the simulators and environments, and emphasizing the use of good practices associated with simulation education. Comments, however, often still arise about inadequacies in the reality associated with their learning experience, and this impacts the learning experience for some.

Officials recently hosted an opening ceremony for the $18 million, 66,000-square-foot, three-story building at the Davie campus.
