Industry leaders cheer vocational training bill
The Associated Press via Lubbock Avalanche Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Industry leaders lined up to praise a high-profile bill in the state Senate designed to give high school students more options in vocational training, saying it will make it easier to find qualified Texans for well-paying technical jobs that don't necessarily require college degrees. Sen. Dan Patrick heads the Senate Education Committee and has proposed giving students more flexibility on elective courses taken through high school, so as to better emphasize "workforce development." His plan offers a career exploration class in the eighth grade, then lets students choose course paths that focus on business and industry, science and technology, or arts and humanities in grades nine through 12. Texas lawmakers on Tuesday began weighing changes to the state's high school graduation requirements to give students more flexibility in which courses they must take. A closely watched bill by Sen. The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Democratic Texas House members have filed an immigration resolution that could serve as a litmus test for Republican support for reforms being suggested at the national level. House Concurrent Resolution 44, which urges the U.S. Congress to "swiftly enact and fund comprehensive immigration reform that creates a road map to citizenship," comes after President Obama's Tuesday State of the Union address, where he again pushed Congress to craft a bill to address the 11 million to 12 million people living in the country illegally, and to repair the nation's existing immigration system.
