San Antonio Express-News
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff’s recent comments about how much regulations add to the cost of housing in San Antonio were a big red flag and should instill a sense of urgency in all who care about the city. “Developers will tell you 25 percent of the cost of building a new home today is because of the city of San Antonio regulations,” he said, according to the Express-News.
That means a $250,000 home would be a $187,500 home without the city’s regulatory costs. And a $1,000 apartment would be a $750 apartment. And those are just the hard costs.

Dallas-Fort Worth sold more houses last year than anyplace in the country, with more than 134,000 houses changing hands.
North Texas accounted for almost a third of the state's total preowned home purchases — more than 102,000 properties. And builders sold almost 32,000 new homes.
So far, even record prices haven't put a lid on D-FW's home buys.

Now that the first round of this election cycle is out of the way, we can talk about November.
The election moves now — runoffs notwithstanding — to battles between the major parties instead of battles within them.
What’s in play? There’s one congressional seat, and maybe a couple more, that could change flags when the major parties clash. There’s a seat in the Texas Senate, and a couple of wildcard races that will put new people in that body. And there are a dozen or so spots in the Texas House that could go to either the Democrats or the Republicans.

The Texas Association of Builders (TAB) will celebrate the 25th-anniversary of its Star Awards this year. In 1992, TAB launched the Texas Star Awards — the only statewide tribute to excellence in the home building industry. With more than 100 categories to choose from and hundreds of entries each year, it is an inspiring accomplishment to be recognized as the best in Texas! This year's award winners will also get a 25th-anniversary trophy to showcase at their office and online.
Now is your opportunity to enter a favorite project, a builder, remodeler, designer, developer, associate or person that stands out from the rest. Online entries are currently open and we encourage you to take advantage of the $125 per entry early bird pricing. After March 6, the fee increases.
Winners will be showcased in the September/October Texas Builder magazine (hardcopy and online), featured in a photo gallery online at TexasBuilders.org and invited to the prestigious Star Awards reception at the Hilton Anatole Dallas on Aug. 9.
Submit your online nominations now at TABStarAwards.com! Final Deadline: Monday, March 20

The state has little to show by the way of public school finance reform as we approach the second anniversary of a Texas Supreme Court ruling that found the system deeply flawed but constitutional. Forgive us for being naive, but we expected state leaders to get moving quickly on improving the antiquated public school finance system after the May 2016 ruling.
Its message seemed pretty clear.

The bricklayers work with ruthless efficiency, scraping and slathering mortar brick after brick, tamping each down to ensure everything is level. By the end of a single hour, with thousands of spectators watching, they have built a stretch of wall that would be a day’s work for a mason building at a normal pace.
“I’m on the edge of crazy when I’m laying brick,” said Matt Cash of Charlotte, N.C., a defending champion of the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500, the world’s largest competition of bricklayers.

Haley is a football Hall of Famer and five-time World Champion, but he and other building materials are no match for brick.
Prospective homebuyers want brick because it withstands the elements and keeps homes comfortable year-round. It eliminates maintenance and can last for centuries. And brick delivers insurance savings and higher resale value. Even Charles Haley agrees…You Can’t Beat Brick!

Texas Observer
Last month, political observers took note of extraordinary early voting numbers from the state’s 15 most-populous largest counties. Most of those counties are Democratic strongholds, but they rarely turn out in the way Democrats would like. Usually, many more people in those counties vote in the Republican primary than the Democratic one, but this year many more Ds than Rs voted in the two weeks prior to Election Day. That caught the attention of the national media, for the simple reason that TTB is an all-or-nothing proposition. People watching Texas from afar are naturally not very interested in the balance of power in the Legislature, or county government. They’re interested first in whether Texas could flip in a presidential race and, secondly, whether they can be rid of Ted Cruz.

There is not much both sides can agree on in the Republican primary for House District 134. But at least one thing seems to unite them: Whatever the outcome Tuesday, the race is likely to leave a lasting mark on the Texas political landscape.

A seal of approval for commercial buildings, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification isn’t as well known for houses, condos and apartments.

If it seems like Dallas-Fort Worth is full of construction projects, that's because it is, according to Site Selection magazine's 2017 Governor's Cup rankings.
The magazine ranks metro areas and states by the number of new or expansion corporate construction projects over the course of the year.
