A new guide describes how builders can increase the structural and energy performance of a home with a raised-heel truss construction system. According to the publisher of the guide, APA — The Engineered Wood Association, building with raised-heel trusses results in savings for the builder and an energy-efficient, structurally superior residence for the homeowner. A raised-heel truss has a "heel" that extends up from the top of the wall and elevates the truss at the building's edges. In other respects, it is identical to a conventional truss.

A textbook proposed to help teach the cultural history of Mexican-Americans in Texas public schools is under scrutiny by scholars, some of whom decry the effort as racist and not a reflection of serious academic study. American households spend around $230 billion each year on energy, not including transportation — and the residential sector accounts for 20 percent of the total energy consumed in the U.S.
With this in mind, it's clear to see that increasing a home's performance doesn't just benefit the climate. Compliance with strong building energy codes are one of the most fundamental, affordable and effective mechanisms for increasing the long-term efficiency of our buildings by requiring a minimum level of cost-effective and energy-efficient technologies.
