Abbott: Don't expect any more special sessions
KHOU-TV
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wants those whose business brings them to Austin every two years to know the Texas Legislature won't see any extra innings if he can help it. In his first in-depth interview since the regular session of the 84th Texas Legislature gaveled to a close, Abbott said he would give the 150 state representatives and 31 senators an "A" on their legislative report card. After declaring priorities at the beginning of session including early and higher education, transportation, border security, ethics and tax relief, Abbott said the legislature moved each of those items forward.

Minorities in forefront of big city mayoral races
The Texas Tribune
As Texas' major cities continue their decades-long evolution to minority-majority populations — where there are fewer whites than blacks and Hispanics combined — tracking minority and female ascension to mayoral firsts has almost reached the complexity of a political trivia game. But the diversity of candidates is not a mere function of census numbers, political organizers and local leaders say. It's the result of years of work in the trenches as people of color have labored to accumulate political capital.

Mostly, Patrick says his Texas Senate got the job done
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is thrilled with this Texas Legislature, and he doesn't understand if you're not. He came by WFAA-TV to say so, speaking to Texans both to his left and to his even-further-right. By delivering an average $125 property tax cut, more state troopers along the border and new A-F grades for public schools, "the Senate led," the Houston radio executive said after taping an Inside Texas Politics interview.

Builders: It's time to think differently
Builder
The most telling factor right now for residential new construction — whatever the scale, positioning, and geography of one's operation — is that catalyst of all catalysts in housing markets: urgency. Urgency only happens on a home-by-home basis in the present. Urgency's consequence is both volume and margins. To kindle it, home builders—whether a pickup truck builder or a Fortune 100 company — need to think differently about thinking differently. We tend to believe that thinking differently in home building means doing things right and doing the right things on a home-by-home basis, and that's been true up to now. But will it continue to be?

Abbott signs E-verify mandate, tweaking Perry executive order
Houston Chronicle
Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation to require Texas state agencies to ensure all hires are American citizens using the E-verify system, fulfilling a campaign promise while tweaking a policy put in place by his predecessor, Rick Perry. The bill signed by Abbott will strengthen enforcement of an executive order issued by Perry last December, but also will limit it to agency employees, rather than including workers at private companies that contract with the state. Perry, who made his second presidential campaign official last week, has cited his order as part of a broader message about his experience of leadership on immigration and foreign policy issues.

By Michael J. Berens
Increased daylighting is now a common strategy for reducing energy consumption in buildings. It has the added benefit that it is also good for occupants. Exposure to sunlight and natural views have been shown to improve mood, increase productivity and enhance wellness. Several recent studies have found that providing access to nature and natural views in the built environment also promotes a number of other positive behaviors.
