Window on State Government    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Businesses have a little more than a week remaining to take advantage of the Texas Fresh Start tax amnesty period, which ends on Aug. 17. The amnesty is a chance for businesses to clear up their tax records and save money by not having to pay penalty and interest on tax reports they had failed to file. Businesses can file missing reports and pay the overdue taxes, or amend and pay previous reports in which they had incorrectly stated a lower amount than was due. The tax amnesty covers taxes and fees that were originally due before April 1, 2012. More

New plant to generate power ahead of schedule
Fuel Fix    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new power plant designed to help reduce global warming will go online earlier than expected to help beat back Texas heat. NRG Energy said it will add a 75 megawatt natural gas generating unit to its big W.A. Parish power plant in Fort Bend County next summer. The unit initially was scheduled to go online in 2015 as part of a system to capture carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas linked to climate change — emitted by one of the four coal-fired generators at the plant. Ranchers seeking hardier breeds to deal with drought, climate change
The Associated Press via    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cattle are being bred with genes from their African cousins who are accustomed to hot weather. New corn varieties are emerging with larger roots for gathering water in a drought. Someday, the plants may even be able to "resurrect" themselves after a long dry spell, recovering quickly when rain returns. Across American agriculture, farmers and crop scientists have concluded that it's too late to fight climate change. They need to adapt to it with a new generation of hardier animals and plants specially engineered to survive, and even thrive, in intense heat, with little rain. More

Lubbock City Council says proposed fracking ban unlikely
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A community activist says he will ask the City Council to rescind a lease it granted an oil extraction company in March because, he believes, the company's hydraulic fracturing process will expose residents to air and water contamination. Armando Gonzales also said he intends to urge city leaders to ban the process, also known as "fracking." City officials said, however, it's unlikely the council will back down from either position. Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The City Council discussed increases in the city's property tax, water and wastewater rates, but even with increases, the $13 million in anticipated revenues for 2012-13 would still fall almost $2 million short of budgeted expenses, according to city budget documents. Under the proposed 2012-13 budget, the property tax rate would increase by almost 2 percent, and water and wastewater rates would increase by 2 and 3 percent, respectively. More

No city tax rate increase foreseen for San Antonio
San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
CPS Energy payments to the city are down and property tax revenue is flat, but the income from sales tax is up slightly and will help fund a $2.279 billion budget, City Manager Sheryl Sculley will tell the City Council today. The balanced budget she'll present is smaller than the city's all-time largest — fiscal 2011's budget came in at $2.374 billion — and it focuses on several core priorities, including public safety and increased street and sidewalk maintenance.
