This president casts a big shadow.
Donald Trump's popularity with Texas Republicans could buffer any midterm election blues; if you're with him and he's popular, you're in good shape. If he's not popular when it comes time to vote, of course, a lot of Republican candidates could go down on Election Day. That said, Texas Republican voters overwhelmingly approve of the job he's doing now — Democrats, by similar margins, overwhelmingly disapprove.

For several months, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has quietly shambled along in a zombielike state.
The Trump administration had announced in September 2017 that it was sunsetting the program, which had temporarily protected from deportation young adult unauthorized immigrants who came to the US as children.
But then this January, a federal court partially blocked the administration's move, allowing some 700,000 unauthorized immigrants who were already protected under the program to renew their applications.
That limbo may come to an abrupt end in the next few weeks.

"We have a marketing problem in America." So said Roy Spence, co-founder and chairman of GSD&M, a leading marketing communications and advertising company, to attendees of the 18th annual Sunbelt Builders Show™, hosted by the Texas Association of Builders at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. "All we hear is the political sides, on all sides, who would perpetuate and 'us vs. them' culture. Us versus them is not the purpose of America. Us versus them is not the promise of America." To combat this divide, Spence — whose agency has helped grow some of the world’s most successful brands — decided to take on America as his client.

A federal judge last week ordered revival of the controversial DACA program, but on Aug. 8, Texas headed to court, contesting the policy's constitutionality.
The outcome of the Texas-led challenge by 10 states could affect not just the lives of those living here under DACA, but also the state's economic health. In a friend-of-the-court brief, the Texas Association of Business and its allies argue that if the young people, brought to the U.S. by parents who immigrated illegally, were no longer covered under the DACA policy, the nation would lose about $450 billion in gross domestic product over the next decade, with Texas absorbing $6 billion in lost annual GDP.

After seven long years of litigation, opponents of Texas' voter ID law say the case is over.
In a court filing on Aug. 8, opponents of the law requiring Texas voters to present photo identification to vote told a federal district judge that the case was settled and that they would not pursue any other remedies or changes to the law they first challenged in 2011 as discriminatory against voters of color.

Housing prices are cooking. Across the nation, the price of homes is rising faster than the rate of inflation—in some places by a factor of three. That's true of high-cost cities and lower-cost cities such as Charlotte and Tampa alike. And the overheated market for homes is costing the middle class the American dream. Nationwide, the price for homes is approaching the zenith seen in 2006, just before the market fell into a foreclosure crisis and the economy sank into the Great Recession. But there are key differences between the housing peak in 2006 and the housing peak today.
