The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
A large majority of the residents of Texas cities on the U.S.-Mexico border feel relatively safe despite harsh rhetoric from lawmakers and a consistent media portrayal of their communities as war zones, according to a recent poll. The poll of 1,222 residents of border cities from California to Texas was commissioned by the Border Network for Human Rights and conducted by the Reuel Group. More than a quarter of the respondents live in El Paso, Laredo, McAllen and Brownsville. More

U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, himself a former Border Patrol sector commander, said Wednesday that the U.S. government may be pouring too much money into border security and not enough into port-of-entry crossings that are vital to the economy. Gov. Rick Perry calls on Bill White to apologize for 'master' comment
The Dallas Morning News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rick Perry is calling on Bill White to apologize for telling a black audience in Dallas that he wanted to be a "servant" leader, while the incumbent governor wanted to be "treated as master." Perry campaign aides contend the remarks, and reported by The Dallas Morning News, were racially motivated and designed to fire up black voters who are sensitive to terms that hark back to slavery. Perry will not meet with newspaper editorial boards leading up to his faceoff with White, Perry spokesman Mark Miner said. Texas sues feds over Gulf drilling ban
The Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Accusing the Obama administration of exceeding its authority and violating federal law, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a lawsuit seeking to end a moratorium on deep-water oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The drilling ban, announced July 12 amid fears of additional catastrophic blowouts after the Deepwater Horizon disaster pumped millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf, was enacted without consulting Texas — or properly weighing the economic impact — as required by federal law, Abbott told a U.S. District Court in Houston. Texas research institutes will receive the largest chunk of a $21.3 million three-year grant from the Department of Energy, which is intended to develop ways to store CO2 underground in an effort to mitigate climate change, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy James Markowsky announced. The University of Texas at Austin and Fusion Petroleum Technologies, Inc. in The Woodlands will receive $2.2 million in funding to research new ways to store CO2 — a greenhouse gas that scientists say leads to climate change — in underground wells. The Brownsville Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Port of Brownsville's "short-sea" shipping route with Port Manatee, Fla., has been designated part of the America's Marine Highway Program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Transportation aimed at transferring a portion of U.S. cargo from overcrowded highways to waterborne vessels and America's underused waterways. The fledgling container-on-barge shipping operation the Port of Brownsville operates with Port Manatee, Fla., was chosen by the DOT's Maritime Administration for inclusion in the four-month-old Marine Highway program. Insurer won't pay Ike claim without documentation for lost items
The Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After Hurricane Ike swept away the first floor of Donald Box's Bayou Vista home, he and his wife made a list of 376 missing items for their flood insurer, which quickly paid the claim. A few months later, they compiled another list of things they'd missed or didn't have time to estimate values for the first time around: guns, a drill press and 126 other items. But the insurer wouldn't pay that claim unless the couple could provide receipts to prove they owned the items, Box said. He and others say the requirement could make it more difficult for home-owners to recover insurance proceeds in the future. More
