Issues facing Texas Legislature will impact energy industry
Midland Reporter-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When the next session of the Texas Legislature opens in January, "it will be about money," said State Rep. Tom Craddick, who has represented the Midland area since taking office in 1969. "Money will be a big challenge — where to put it, where to not put it, will there be enough or will we have to cut spending." He said that cuts made during the last session in 2011 will not be restored. More

4 years later, Ike claims keep coming
Austin American-Statesman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
State Rep. Larry Taylor released insurance data detailing what he called "troubling legal settlement patterns" and "staggering litigation expenses' associated with the troubled Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. Taylor, R-Friendswood, pointed out that the association, the insurer of last resort for many coastal residents, has paid $1.2 billion to coastal customers and their lawyers since a class action settlement for slab claims related to Hurricane Ike in 2008. But there could be much more to come, he said. More

Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Residential real-estate prices increased in the year ended August by the most in two years, a sign housing will continue to boost U.S. economic growth. The S&P/Case-Shiller index of property values in 20 cities rose 2 percent from August 2011, the biggest year-to-year gain since July 2010, after climbing 1.2 percent the prior month, the group said in New York. The median forecast of 25 economists in a Bloomberg survey projected a 1.9 percent gain. More

A few more move out of apartments than in
Fort Worth Star Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Slightly more renters moved out of apartments in the third quarter than moved in, a shift in a tight market that has spawned a wave of new construction, according to the latest MPF Research report for Dallas-Fort Worth. "The number of occupied units basically flat-lined, and that led to a bit of a slowdown in the rent growth pace," the report said. In all, renters moved out of 46 apartments from July through September, after demand came in at a whopping 8,031 units during second quarter, the report said. Locally, net move-outs were in Grand Prairie, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and east Fort Worth. More

Sandy to boost construction jobs as rebuilding spurred
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demand for construction workers and materials is likely to receive a boost as homeowners in coastal areas of New York and New Jersey rebuild after their properties were devastated by flooding and heavy winds. "It's the most adverse way you ever want to see positive growth," Tom Jeffery, chief hazard scientist for CoreLogic Inc., said in a telephone interview. "But a high percent of damaged properties are going to be repaired." More

Report: San Antonio on gaining end of construction employment numbers
San Antonio Business Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Like Texas, the San Antonio area is faring better than much of the country when it comes to the construction industry. According to the latest analysis by the Arlington, Va.-based Associated General Contractors of America, the San Antonio/New Braunfels metro added 1,800 employees to its construction sector between September 2011 and 2012. The industry reported 42,700 construction employees last September. A year later, that number had risen to 44,500 — an increase of 4 percent. More

University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll: Texans Are Leery of Government
The Texas Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Texans don't trust government very much — especially the federal government, according to a University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll. Their least favorite branch of the federal government? Congress, by a wide margin. Asked to choose their most trusted part of the federal government, only 10 percent listed the legislative branch and Congress. Nearly three times as many listed the executive branch and the presidency, while 34 percent listed the judicial branch and the Supreme Court. More

Analysts: Superstorm Sandy's cost may hit $50 billion
The Associated Press via Engineering News-Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Superstorm Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm. In the long run, the devastation the storm inflicted on New York City and other parts of the Northeast will barely nick the U.S. economy. That's the view of economists who say a slightly slower economy in coming weeks will likely be matched by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to growth over time. The short-term blow to the economy, though, could subtract about 0.6 percentage point from U.S. economic growth in the October-December quarter, IHS says. More

High costs bedevil builders
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New home construction has picked up momentum in recent months after years of contraction. But the industry is facing a fresh challenge: Building costs are going through the roof. School board members complain of unequal system
The Associated Press via San Antonio Express-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several Texas school board members testified that differences in property values lead to unequal taxation and funding for public schools. The school board members complained about how some wealthy districts can raise more money at lower tax rates, creating inequities between neighboring communities. More than 600 school districts have sued the state over the way it finances schools, claiming the system is inadequate and unfair. More

Smart meters can provide extra HVAC troubleshooting challenge
Contracting Buisness    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As power companies seek to improve the efficiency of the electric grid by better matching demand with supply, they are relying with increasing frequency on smart meters. Smart meters record electricity and gas usage in real time in homes and businesses and relay that information back to the utility company. Once applied primarily to commercial and industrial customers, the practice of automatic meter reading through the use of smart meters is finding its way into the residential market. More

Home remodeling spending expected to accelerate
ACHR News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Fannie makes deal with insurers to help homeowners
MarketWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Government-seized housing finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said that they have reached deals with nine mortgage insurers that could help distressed borrowers avoid foreclosure. Specifically, the two firms reached deals with mortgager insurers that would allow mortgage servicers, which collect payments from borrowers for Fannie and Freddie and mortgage investors, to complete so-called short-sales and deed-in-lieu of foreclosure without seeking approval from the insurer. Efforts for seagrass protection reformed
Corpus Christi Caller-Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After suspicious anglers soundly rejected a Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPW) suggestion to expand seagrass protection into waters north and south of the JFK Causeway, the department backed off. Maybe regrouped is a better description. Rather than shove this conservation plan down anglers' throats TPW convened a group of department staffers, anglers, conservation group reps, guides and other stake holders to provide guidance on the future of seagrass protection and bay-conflict avoidance.
