The Texas Tribune
For Republican presidential candidates, Texas is the center of the universe — the biggest of the reliable red states and the source of the most electoral votes. It is to the Republicans what California is to the Democrats; the foundation of victory in national elections.
Which is why Monday marks the end of one of Donald Trump's biggest implied political threats. You know the one, the idea that if he doesn’t do well in the primaries that he might turn around and launch an independent candidacy?
Not in Texas.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Former state Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, has joined the race to become the next Texas Railroad Commissioner.
Burnam drove to Austin to file for the post, just days after incumbent Republican Railroad Commissioner David Porter announced he was withdrawing from the race.
But Burnam, 62, said he has been thinking about running for this commission since the 1980s and had already made up his mind to get in the race before Porter’s announcement.

Houston voters will get the final say Saturday on who their next mayor will be, capping a race that seems to have increasingly laid the city's political identity on the line.
At stake is not only the leadership of the largest city in Texas — and fourth-largest in the country — but also the hopes of Democrats and Republicans who have been given a clear choice in the runoff between state Rep. Sylvester Turner and former Kemah Mayor Bill King. To varying degrees, the two candidates have eschewed party labels, King more than Turner. But they both bring unmistakable affiliations to the race: Turner has been a Democrat during his 26 years in the Texas House, while King has been the beneficiary of some of Houston's most politically engaged Republicans.

Democrats Trey Martinez Fischer and José Menéndez will once again battle over Texas Senate District 26.
At a San Antonio restaurant, Martinez Fischer, a veteran member of the Texas House, announced he would challenge Menéndez, the incumbent and himself a former longtime House member, in the March primary. In their previous matchup, Menéndez beat Martinez Fischer in a February special election runoff to succeed state Sen. Leticia Van Putte, who quit to run for San Antonio mayor.

The judge presiding over Ken Paxton's criminal case has denied the attorney general's attempts to have his three felony indictments thrown out.
"Yes, all the motions we filed have been denied," said Phillip Hilder, one of Paxton's attorneys. "We are extremely disappointed with the court's ruling today as we believe that each of the motions was well founded. And we are currently reviewing options at this point which may include appeal."

A community 20 miles east of Dallas will soon be transformed as construction on the 1,850-home Gateway Parks project in Forney is now underway, reports Steve Brown of The Dallas Morning News.
The project is the biggest section of a 2,000-acre community that will, when completed, contain apartments, shopping centers, offices, and single-family homes. It’s been in the works for more than a decade and is being built by an investment company owned by Dallas’ Hunt family.

LGI Homes has been growing so quickly investors could be forgiven for thinking they had been transported back in time to the housing boom. The way the home builder's stock has fallen this month, they could also be forgiven for thinking they are back in the housing bust.
It doesn’t help, either, that LGI's home state of Texas represents a big chunk of its business, exposing it to the oil-price rout. Or that LGI builds its houses on "spec" — that is with no identified buyers. Or that it is focused on the exurbs and touts the chance to own a new home “for $0 down."
