Campbell's to phase out BPA in soup cans

After months of pressure from consumer, public health and concerned parents' organizations, Campbell's Soup Co. announced to shareholders recently that it will phase out the use of the toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in its can linings. However, the company did not provide a timeline or identify what alternative can-lining materials it will use.

BPI boosted by strong performance in Europe

British Polythene Industries (BPI) has reported turnover for 2011 up 6.3 percent at £508 million, boosted by a strong performance from its European activities. Pre-exceptional operating profits rose 21 percent to £21.6 million, reflecting what the group called "another excellent performance from our European operations." More

SPC report gives guidance on use of recycled fiber in packaging

Recognizing the growing interest in increasing recycled content in packaging as a sustainability strategy, GreenBlue's Sustainable Packaging Coalition has released a report on the opportunities and challenges for using recycled fiber in packaging. "Guidelines for Recycled Content in Paper and Paperboard Packaging" outlines opportunities to use recycled content in 20 common retail packaging applications, including shopping and take-out bags, cereal boxes, toothbrush blister packs, software boxes, and coffee canisters. Mayr-Melnhof workers in Bootle have rejected a redundancy offer made by MMP as talks between the firm and Unite come to a halt. Locked-out workers at the Bootle site, which produces packaging for the food industry, are in dispute over terms and conditions being attached to planned job cuts. More

La Seda de Barcelona approves capital increase

La Seda de Barcelona has approved a capital increase of €400 million to boost its plastic packaging division (APPE). The company will use the capital to expand into new markets and focus on new materials, such as HDPE. In Europe, the company will enhance APPE's presence in the northern and eastern European markets, including in Russia and the Ukraine, by building a new production plant in Poland. It is also considering investing in a 400,000 tonne PET plant in Portugal. More

Velcro sealing technology is an innovative alternative to conventional rail track sealing strips on bags for food packaging. Amcor Flexibles and Velcro Europe have teamed up to promote the Velcro Press-Lok system, combining Amcor's films expertise with Velcro's sealing system based on opposing strips of tiny hooks and clasps, the firms announced Feb. 29. The partners claim the new system is simple to open and re-seal, even if the track is contaminated by food which would obstruct rail tracks commonly used to seal food bags. More

Kathy Hayes, of Augusta, Ga., likes buying store-brand goods. Hayes recently purchased Kroger's brand of canned goods, cheese and pizza. She saves about 20 percent on her grocery bill by purchasing the store brand, she said. Sometimes, national brands are cheaper if there's a sale, but she usually finds the best prices on store-brand items. She doesn't have much time to clip coupons to get deals on national brands, and she doesn't need to buy in large quantities, which many coupons require, she said. More

Sales up for Macfarlane as pension deficit expands

Macfarlane Group has revealed sales growth in both its distribution and manufacturing operations as it highlighted difficulties in managing its pension deficit. In full year results posted this morning, the business reported a 7 percent lift in turnover to £144.6 million, while pre-tax profits were £3.9 million, compared to £4.2 million in 2010. More
