This clever packaging turns waste into educational toys
Fast Company
In a remote rural village in Kenya or Malawi, you won't find a toy store, but you'll probably find a shop selling soda. That fact inspired an idea: What if old soda bottles and other packaging could be transformed into toys that children can use for learning? A new series of designs that turn old packages into simple educational tools could give kids who don't have access to preschool a better chance at learning how to count or read. They were created as a concept for the design firm's Amplify challenges, which asked for ways to help children in low-income areas thrive in the first five years of life.

Coating matters: Construction materials for coating equipment
Coating equipment can be exposed to a variety of conditions — acidic fluids, corrosive chemicals, and abrasive slurries to name a few. So how do you identify the right material selection for the tooling that will carry the fluid to the substrate for application? While not an exact science, the plan should be to look at it from two perspectives and meet in the middle.

Barrier resins: Properties, processing and handling of EVOH, Part 2
EVOH has allowed for conversion from foil and metallized film laminations to co-extruded barrier films but some applications require better flex crack than conventional EVOH alone can provide. Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) offers many advantages versus traditional packaging platforms, such as metal cans, foil-based flexible packaging, and glass jars. EVOH packaging is microwaveable; can be scanned in metal detectors; is transparent; possesses some superior mechanical properties; and can be recycled.

Sizing up success: Consumers crave packaging size variety
The Dieline
Not too long ago, grocers offered little variety in packaging sizes. Shoppers could buy soups in one of two sizes of metal cans; they grabbed milk in gallon and half-gallon jugs or quart cartons; and they reached for juices in multi-serving bottles or kiddie-sized juice boxes. Now, however — thanks to U.S. consumers’ evolving lifestyles and tastes — size matters. Portioned packages of stocks and broths and single-serve packages of juices and energy drinks stand shoulder to shoulder with jumbo-sized versions and many sizes in between.

"We're seeing more material conversions going from paperboard to [PE] pouches," Dow executive Greg Jozwiak said at NPE 2015 in Orlando. On Friday, March 13, Anheuser-Busch launched a new beer, Oculto. The lager’s novel formulation — infused blue agave for a unique citrus flavor — and positioning centers on mystery and spontaneous nights out with friends. The packaging delivers several revelations that demonstrate how the brewer and its designers drilled down in ways that play further on the brand’s elements of mystery and intrigue. For starters, the carton uses metallic fiber-board packaging, which AB claims as a first for beer packaging in the U.S.

Corrugated packaging industry shows way forward for UK manufacturing
Packaging Europe
Despite an improving economy, there is still scope for improvement in productivity as Britain is now around a fifth less productive per worker than its main competitors. However, one industry in the U.K. that has already proven that it is up to the challenge of improving its productivity is corrugated packaging, says the Confederation of Paper Industries. Thanks to forward thinking and innovation, the U.K. Corrugated Industry has become a leaner manufacturing machine following an efficiency drive that has seen productivity driven up 40 in a decade and almost 500 million pound sterling invested in new machinery and plant over the last two years.

Multisorb presents packaging technology for preserving freshness of meals and ready-to-eat
In addition to remaining fresh in severe environments, MREs must also have a long shelf life - up to three years. Multisorb Technologies’ solution is optimizable FreshPax oxygen absorbing packets. Food-safe FreshPax oxygen absorbers are placed directly in the MRE packaging to absorb oxygen and maintain the proper moisture level. The water activity of the sorbent is matched to the water activity of the food product so foods like pocket sandwiches and other baked foods maintain a desirable texture. By absorbing and permanently retaining the oxygen in the sealed package, FreshPax packets greatly inhibit the growth of molds and other spoilage organisms and maintain shelf stability.
