It's gotten a lot harder to be "green.", an online coupon site, revealed in an Earth Day-inspired edition of the Shoppers Trend Report that while 46 percent of respondents are more inclined to buy a product if it is eco-friendly, the majority of respondents (59 percent) are unwilling to pay more money for that eco-friendly product or service. This Shoppers Trend Report includes data from a survey jointly conducted with Ipsos Public Affairs. More

U.S. regulators are proposing that food companies that want to use tiny engineered particles in their packaging will have to provide extra testing data to show the products are safe. The U.S.-based Food and Drug Administration issued tentative guidelines on April 20 for food and cosmetic companies interested in using nanoparticles, which are measured in billionths of a meter. Pharmaceutical packaging is designed to keep the product free from damage and contamination; however, occasionally the packaging itself is the source of product contamination. A pharmaceutical company noticed a problem with several white tablets that displayed small blue defects at random locations on all faces of the tablets. The defects were less than 0.1mm in size, as shown in the photograph here. More

EuPR, the Brussels-based organisation representing Europe's plastics recyclers, has developed new guidelines for HDPE bottles with the aim of increasing HDPE recycling. According to Christian-Yves Crépet, EuPR HDPE working group chairman: "HDPE is a very easily recyclable material." But only 300,000 tonnes of HDPE bottles are being recycled annually in Europe - just 10 percent to 15 percent of the total HDPE waste stream. More

Gloucester Engineering Co. (GEC) announces that they have sold two new 8 up cast stretch film lines to Scientex in Malaysia. It will be their highest output stretch film line ever sold in the Asia-Pacific region. This is the third time in five years that Scientex has expanded their production capacity, and each time they have used GEC equipment. Scientex now will now have 5 complete GEC lines in their facility, believed to now have the most stretch film capacity under one roof in the world. Their production is expected to reach over 150,000 mt/year. More
