Designing cost-effective packaging strategies
Packaging World
Reaching consumers these days is difficult. No longer do traditional methods of advertising and marketing warrant sufficient attention of consumers or their dollars. Business owners, and advertisers alike, struggle to come up with creative ways to grab even the smallest bit of attention for their products. Creating an effective package design is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to do this, but it requires originality, point of difference, and the ability to connect with consumers.

Semo Packaging develops new film to preserve food longer
Packaging Business Review
Europe's polyethylene and flexible packaging company Semo Packaging has developed a new mono-material solution called Fresh’Closure to help preserve foods for a longer duration. Traditional food packaging solutions are not often user-friendly. They take longer time to reclose and also features poor product preservation with broken films and lost ties. Featuring a drawstring system, Semo's solution enables simplified opening and closing. The company said that it was a challenge to preserve food products if its packaging did not ensure the protection of the products from humidity, dirt or mold.

Protective packaging to combat food waste
Packaging Europe
According to a recent report one-third of all food produced in the world ends up as waste, costing consumers globally more than 259 billion sterling pounds per year. In addition, around 200,000 tons of the 15 million tons of food thrown away in the U.K. every year comes directly from stores. It’s therefore no surprise that attitudes to food waste are continuing to change and take prominence.

A closer look at Carlsberg's fiber bottle
Packaging World
Professor Flemming Besenbacher, Chairman of the Carlsberg Foundation, attracted a great deal of attention at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January when he presented a prototype of a fiber-based bottle that the group wants to launch within three years. The bottle is part of ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts within Carlsberg, and it quickly became news around the world. The technology to manufacture bottles from molded fiber in an effective and energy-efficient manner has been developed by the Danish company ecoXpac, which is now part of a development group with the DTU (Danish Technological Institute) and Carlsberg.

Recyclable PET beer keg locks in quality
Packaging World
Steel keg systems for on-premise beer sales have long been the norm in the industry. The systems deliver very good quality — if maintained properly. When they are not, inconsistent beer quality results. Steel keg systems also come with other drawbacks: the cost of returning the kegs, the expense of the gas and regulator systems needed to deliver the beer to the tap, and the inability to evacuate all of the product from the keg.
